A couple who had their Wembley cup final tickets shredded by their naughty puppy will receive new ones.

Alan Carling and wife Jessica, from Longbenton, are both fans of Newcastle United, who are set to face off against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final on February 26.

The pair had gone to see the Toon play against fellow Premier League side Liverpool and returned home to find that their 11-month-old golden retriever Rudy had torn the tickets to pieces.

The Magpies have not reached a domestic cup final since the 1999 FA Cup Final against United, which they lost 2-0, 1999.

Seeing what had happened, Alan joked he was selling Rudy for £5 when posting the incident to social media.

He said to the Chronicle Live: "I opened the door to find the tickets shredded all over the floor. My jaw just hit the floor. I couldn't believe it. I sent the dog out in the garden. I gave him the silent treatment, I couldn't even look at him in the eye.

"I was trying to piece them together, it was like a jigsaw. I was on my hands and knees and I think I just started laughing. I was laughing but at the same time I was like 'If I don't laugh I will burst into tears. You couldn't make this up, this is ridiculous'.

"It was a question of what do we do now?"

As for Rudy, Alan claims Facebook removed his post as people actually thought he was trying to sell the dog online.

"Rudy is an important part of our family. We got him as a support dog for my four-year-old son who is non verbal autistic," he explained.

The parents to Alfie, nine, Evie, seven, and Charlie, four, had entered the ballot for Wembley tickets as members of the club and were pleased to have been successful before little Rudy had other ideas.

Alan said Jessica found it "hilarious" and could see the green logo Carabao still on the shredded ticker.

The dad-of-three, who coaches an under-nine football team in Forest Hall, said: "I could see the green on the ticket and I could kind of make out Carabao Cup. I was in a state of shock, I was just gobsmacked."

Thankfully, Newcastle were able to issue the pair with a new set of tickets after a trip to the ticket office. One member of staff even recognised what had happened after seeing the social media post by Alan.

He added: "I think I just knew in the back of my head that there was a way we could get this fixed.

"I explained the situation to a lady at the box office and she was quite bemused by it. She was quite straight-faced and I thought she thinks I'm trying to pull a fast one!

"Someone else who worked there said: 'Oh are you the guy on Facebook?' and he sorted it out straight away. He was having a good laugh as well."
