San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has been struggling in training camp, and now clips have emerged of the 23-year-old missing seemingly simple throws.

The quarterback saga at the 49ers is a unique one, as injuries to Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo last season meant the very last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy, was called upon. Purdy was a sensation, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game before getting injured himself in the defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Not only was it a long recovery process for Lance, he watched on as Purdy took his place and since then many have called for him to be the new starter. Lance was drafted third overall in 2021 to be the franchise quarterback, but general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have since elected Purdy as QB1.

Lance is back in training and looking to secure the back-up slot at the very least, or even push for the starting role and put pressure on Purdy. But judging by the footage emerging from camp, it's actually Lance that's feeling the pressure.

The 23-year-old has gone viral for the wrong reasons after footage emerged of him looking stiff during physical drills, before missing what seemed to be an easy throw. Lance tossed the ball way too high, soaring over one of the quarterbacks coaches.

Fans have reacted to the clip online, stating that it's a throw you'd expect "high school quarterbacks to make" with others referencing the 49ers' poor decision to draft Lance over Justin Fields. "The 49ers drafting Trey Lance put their franchise back 4-5 years," one fan said.

"The 49ers would be legitimate Super Bowl contenders with Justin Fields under centre. You can’t convince me that your local high school QB wouldn’t make this throw," they added.

Fields was selected 11th overall by the Chicago Bears, and has been their standout player since joining the franchise. Lance was looking great at the 49ers and is still incredibly young, but he will have to bounce back from this early setback.

However, the 49ers GM sees improvement in Lance and hopes he can continue to develop. "He's throwing the football a lot better," Lynch said. "His base is better. Some of his mechanics are better. Those things are showing up on the field. So I'm not just proud of him for his attitude, leadership, and resiliency. I'm proud of what I'm seeing out there.

"And I know there's been a lot of talk about the opportunities he's not getting. I'm proud of him for what he's doing with the opportunities he is getting. And there's a plan. He'll continue to earn these opportunities, and he'll have plenty to show who he is. He can't get enough. There's no doubt about that."
