A family is livid after they were unable to go on a dream TUI cruise holiday because their British Airways flight was cancelled at the 'last minute', leaving them feeling 'high and dry' at the airport. John Buick and his family arrived at Edinburgh Airport on July 29 to board a flight to Majorca, but says their flight wasn't boarding, before it was announced that it had been cancelled.

The family had booked a package holiday with TUI, who offered passengers another flight for the following day, but it was too late for John and his family who were due to board cruise ship Marella Discovery in Majorca, for a 10-day cruise around the Mediterranean. Because of the cancellation, they ultimately missed the ship's departure, reports Edinburgh Live. The family was offered a full refund for their TUI holiday.

John told Edinburgh Live: "The flight was cancelled and British Airways were going to do the same flight but at 10am on the Sunday morning, but the problem for us is that obviously, we had a TUI cruise that was leaving on Saturday night, so it wasn't good at all.

"We really had been looking forward to this. We are a family of four - husband, wife and two daughters and due to the girls getting older, a cruise seemed to fit everybody. We had never been on a cruise before with the girls and this seemed to be the perfect holiday for us."

He added that other passengers said they'd had similar issues on cruise holidays, missing out on ships' departures due to flight cancellations. John claims that he and his family were "just left high and dry in the airport knowing that our cruise was set to leave that night alongside loads of other passengers".

John alleges that the family tried to find different options and spotted two flights with either easyJet or Ryanair that could get them to Majorca on time, and appeared to have space, but decided not to book separately as they had booked a package holiday with TUI. However when the holiday giant got in touch, the family was told they wouldn't be able to board other flights due to availability, which John described as "rubbish".

A TUI spokesperson told Edinburgh Live: "We’d like to apologise to Mr Buick and all customers on the British Airways operated flight BA4509 from Edinburgh to Palma, who were delayed overnight due to crew illness. Our teams were in contact with customers throughout the delay and all possible flight options were explored, but all passengers were ultimately provided with overnight accommodation."
