Mother-in-laws can be tricky creatures. On one hand, you might have such a good relationship with your partner's parent that you trust them blindly with your child, but other times they might overstep the boundaries and make decisions they have no right to.

One man has been left resenting his mother-in-law after she decided to take his daughter to get her hair cut without permission. If that wasn't bad enough, he said his daughter, who "had a lovely hairdo" was left looking "like the character played by Jim Carrey from the Dumb and Dumber movie", Lloyd.

The dad explained that his mother-in-law had come to babysit his two-year-old daughter for an evening - and five hours later when they came back the parents found she had "butchered" their daughter's hair. In a recent post on forum website Reddit, he said: "She had a lovely hairdo. Maybe a bit longer on the front side but I thought I'll trim it a little next week. Now she looks like the character played by Jim Carrey from the Dumb and Dumber movie.

"How the hell in your right mind do you have the audacity to do something like that? MIL [mother-in-law] said that it was a spontaneous decision and told us that she should of asked but it is not enough for me. I have a feeling she really does not care what I think even though she said she understands. She had no right to do that and I am pretty sure that she understood that because she is not dumb."

The man said he is "trying to forgive" his mother-in-law, but has found it "really hard" to do so, and he doesn't want her to babysit for them again. He explained: "I am trying to forgive her but it is really hard for me to do so. I really don't want her to babysit our child again but I know that maybe in the future we might have to ask her help again. If that happens I am going to tell her that if she as much as removes on hair from her head she's out. Maybe I am overreacting, MIL probably thinks so but I know in my heart that I am not."

The post was flooded with comments from fellow parents who had similar situations with their mother-in-laws. One person said: "My now ex-MIL did this. Picked up our son for the weekend. Ex husband and I both told her, yes, we know he needs a haircut, and the regular lady who cut it was gonna do it on Monday. DO NOT CUT HIS HAIR. You know where this is going."

Others validated his feelings about the situation, with one person saying: "You are completely justified in being angry. Cutting your kid's hair without permission was a definite power play on her part. She overstepped big time."
