Levi Colwill is set to put an end to speculation over his future by penning a new six-year contract with Chelsea.

Colwill, 20, is a graduate of the Blues' esteemed academy but has yet to make a single senior appearance for the club. The highly-rated centre-back did, however, thrive on loan at Brighton last term, where he made his Premier League bow.

Unsurprisingly, Colwill's impressive performances on the south coast saw him attract a whole host of admirers - including Liverpool. And while Colwill has been heavily linked with a summer transfer away from Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, he is now on the verge of committing his long-term future to the Blues.

According to The Athletic, Colwill has agreed a six-year contract in principle with Chelsea, who rebuffed a £30million bid from Brighton earlier in the transfer window. The Seagulls had identified Colwill as their top summer target, whilst Liverpool were also expected to firm up their interest in the centre-half if he had refused to entertain negotiations over a new deal, but Chelsea have always insisted that Colwill was not for sale.

The Southampton-born star will now have his sights set on impressing new head coach Mauricio Pochettino and cementing a spot in the Blues team.

Competition for regular first-team football will be fierce; Chelsea have one of the largest squads in the Premier League and are still working hard to move several players on before September's transfer deadline.

Colwill has already made it clear, though, that he has to continue playing regular football after his performances for Brighton last year propelled him into contention for a call-up to the national team.

The Stamford Bridge starlet has already established himself in the England Under-21 set-up but expressed his desire to break into the senior ranks earlier this month amid those links to Liverpool.

Colwill said: "We’re all pushing and knocking on the door. Everyone has to pay attention to every player here. I feel like this team we had was more than just individuals. In the past England might have lacked that. We’ve always had great players but I think this team is so much different. I love this team.

"I’ll speak to my family, speak to everyone I need to and make a decision. I’ve got to play at the end of the day, to hopefully get there and go to the next (senior) camp.

"But if I’m here, I’ll still be happy. You’ve always got to be happy when you’re picked for any England age group. It’s an honour."
