Newcastle has topped a list of UK cities – that have the best overall “vibe”, according to Brits.

The Geordie city scored 8.09 out of 10 – being ranked as the place with the best food, and the best sense of style. In fact, it topped the list in seven of the nine categories in total – including being the most welcoming, and having the best pub scene.

Other top cities with a good “vibe” include Cardiff and Liverpool – with the latter coming top for the best music scene, scoring 7.53 out of 10, ahead of Newcastle's 7.42 score for music.

However, cities that did not fare so well include Stoke on Trent, which scored bottom in six of the nine categories – including the lowest overall vibe, and having the worst food, music, and nightlife.

Leeds also ranked fairly low, coming bottom for the best sense of style, and in eighth place out of 10 for the best music scene.

However, it comes as the poll of 2,000 Brits found 84% say they enjoy living in or near a city – and two-thirds (67%) would recommend their city to others looking for a new place to live.

The top best things about living in or around a city include good restaurants (36%), good shops (38%) – and there always being something to do (33%).

The research was commissioned by global tech brand HONOR, to mark the launch of its new HONOR 90 smartphone series – which is all about helping users celebrate individuality, and encouraging them to Share Their Vibe with the world.

CEO, Bond Zhang, said: “Newcastle truly has vibes worth sharing, and it’s clear why. A city with a positive and inviting atmosphere becomes a beacon of hope and inspiration, fostering a sense of belonging and unity among its people.

“A good vibe not only enhances the quality of life for residents, but also entices tourists and businesses, leading to economic growth and cultural exchange.

“Not only that, a great city vibe goes hand in hand with individuality – something we celebrate with our latest HONOR 90.”

Liverpool was the only other city to score highly, coming top as the best place to go if you want to watch a good game of sports, and also for its music.

More than four in five Brits say they enjoy living in or near a city (HONOR)

Stoke wasn’t the only city to score low, however, as London was found to be the least welcoming city – while Belfast scored poorly for its sports teams and games.

Given the chance to describe the overall vibe in their city, 41% said it was lively and exciting, while 15% described it as chilled and easy-going.

Friendly people (55%), clean streets (53%), and green spaces (51%), came out as the most popular features a city should have – while a variety of restaurants (45%), good air quality (44%), and a good sense of community (41%) also made the list.

Of those who took part in the study, by OnePoll.com, 57% base their decision on where to live on how likely it is that they’ll be able to be themselves there.
