Sergio Ramos could reignite Lionel Messi rivalry with move to rival MLS team
Sergio Ramos could be set to reignite his rivalry with Lionel Messi, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC linked with a move for the Spanish defender.
The legendary four-time Champions League winner was a driving force for the all-conquering Los Blancos teams of the last decade before joining the Argentine icon at Paris Saint-Germain. The old foes had gone toe-to-toe for countless trophies down the years and faced off in numerous El Clasico encounters but they eventually won Ligue 1 twice together.
Both departed Parc des Princes this summer but Spain's all-time record appearance holder is still without a club after nearly a month as a free agent. The 37-year-old veteran has been linked with a reunion with the former Barcelona hero at Inter Miami at points during this summer but speculation has not materialised into a deal.
With the MLS transfer window still open until August 2, it is clear that any prospective suitors in the leading US league do still have time to pick up the iconic center-back for nothing. However, it appears for now that the Herons seemingly have their sights set on Messi's former strike partner Luis Suarez after already capturing Blaugrana icons Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Now, Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has reported that the five-time La Liga victor could still be gearing up for a move stateside, with current MLS Cup champions LAFC interested in his services. He would instead follow in the footsteps of fellow Santiago Bernabeu old boy Gareth Bale in moving to California.
Pep Guardiola went back on his word after blocking last-ditch Barcelona transferRamos is certainly no stranger to the US and he recently travelled to Florida to watch a UFC event before heading to New York, alongside wife Pilar Rubio. The couple took in the sights in the Big Apple, visiting The Met and the MoMa, with TV presenter Rubio documenting the trip on her Instagram page.
During their time in the city, they took in some exhibitions of the work of world-famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, as well as the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh Alongside pictures from their stay in Manhattan, she posted the caption: ''Visited the Met museum with my love Sergio Ramos.
"One of the plans we've wanted to do for a long time. Unforgettable experiences: Karl Lagerfield 'A line of beauty', Vincent Van Gogh 'Starry Night'... a whole dream come true."
Speculation that Ramos could finally return to his boyhood club Sevilla were refuted by the Andalusian outfit's vice-president earlier this summer. Speaking to Marca Jose Maria del Nido Carrasco explained: "At the moment Sergio Ramos is not an option for Sevilla. I have a good relationship with him. He is a magnificent player and came out of our youth system, but there is nothing with him and Sevilla."
The Spaniard seems to be remaining focused on his fitness as things stand and he has been partaking in high-intensity endurance and calisthenics work in the gym of late, as shown on his Instagram page. In truth, his time in the French capital had been plagued by injury at points and it is clear that the defender is determined to regain peak fitness.
