A migrant who fled his homeland to start a new life in the UK was targeted by a racist attacker. Majid Rahamni left Iran due to fears religious tensions could put his life at risk - but was assaulted outside the block of flats where he now lives in Gateshead, Tyneside.

The 45-year-old is now petrified every time he goes out that someone is going to attack him again. Police are still hunting for the culprit - who Majid did not know - and are understood to be treating it as a hate crime.

He left his home on May 26 to walk to a local shop to buy bread but as he returned he was suddenly confronted by a stranger who hurled abuse and assaulted him. Majid was left bleeding and went into his flat to call for help. After an hour he went out into the street and flagged down a passing police car.

He told the ChronicleLive: "This attack is imprinted in my mind. I always live in fear. I escaped from Iran with many difficulties and came to Europe, but unfortunately, I am not safe here either."

Majid left Iran in 2015 and spent six years in Germany before arriving in England in July 2017. He says religious problems forced him to leave his home and family in Iran. Northumbria Police has confirmed officers are still hunting the attacker, and Majid says he is now afraid to go out.

"Two months or more have passed since that incident," he said. "I always live in fear after that incident and when I go out I think that every person who approaches me from the front wants to attack me.

"My life has become like hell. I go out with fear only for shopping and I don't dare to go to the park or places that are lonely. I am tired of this way of living with fear and I don't know how many years it will take if this fear of mine will disappear or if it will be with me until the day of my death."

Northumbria Police is now appealing for witnesses to the incident. A spokeswoman said: "At 9.30pm on May 26, police received a report a man had been assaulted at an address on Tennyson Court in Gateshead.

“It was reported the victim had been approached by another male he didn’t know, who then assaulted him by hitting him in the face a number of times, before leaving the area.

“An investigation was launched and a number of enquiries were carried out, including a review of CCTV. Attempts to identify the offender have so far proved negative. If anyone has any information they can get in touch."

Call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 066176M/23 with any information.
