Little Mix's Leigh-Anne Pinnock got a huge surprise when she was given an award for her commitment to racial equality.

The mum-of-two, 31, was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of her music career and active campaigning by Buckinghamshire New University (BNU).

But that wasn't the only gift she received as when she was presented with her gong alongside BNU Chancellor and Repair Shop star, Jay Blades, a huge flash mob from the university performed the singer's new single, Don’t Say Love.

As the troupe danced their hearts out, Leigh-Anne, who was sporting a beautiful red gown and matching mortarboard, put her hands to her mouth, overcome with emotion.

Speaking about the university's decision to perform for the singer, Jess Bradbury, Vice-President of Bucks Students’ Union and choreographer said: “We wanted to give Leigh-Anne the welcome to BNU she deserved. She is an inspiration to all of us here both as a performer and activist for social causes."

Leigh-Anne has been a prolific campaigner for racial equality, showcased by her charity, The Black Fund, which offers young people opportunities, access, work and experience, with a focus on the creative industry.

Sharing her pride at being given the honorary doctorate, the singer said: "It’s such a privilege to be recognised by such a credible, creative, and supportive university so I am extremely happy and proud to be here today.

She continued “In many ways my story is one that I think mirrors many of the student’s experiences here today. It’s a story of a woman who had a passion, who had a goal that she thought might just be achievable."

Leigh-Anne collected her award alongside BBC star Jay, who was attending the ceremony in his formal capacity as Chancellor of the university for the first time since he took on the role in March 2023.

Speaking about why the Little Mix star had been given the award, he said: "Leigh-Anne couldn’t deserve this more. Not only is she an incredible talent, but she also uses her platform for the good of society and has never forgotten her roots. I am so proud of all that she’s achieved and was thrilled to be here today to see her recognised for her work."

The singer has just got back from Turks and Caicos where she was on honeymoon with her husband, Andre Gray.

Leigh-Anne took to Instagram earlier this month to post the romantic snap of the couple in which she and the Aris FC football player can be seen snuggling up under the sun, having exchanged vows in a secret wedding ceremony in Jamaica in June.
