Eddie Howe has had his high-pressure mission spelled out by Newcastle's Saudi owners who want the Toon to "be No1."

Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has piled on the expectation by insisting the club must have the "mindset" to become the best in the Premier League. In footage to be shown on Prime Video's new documentary We are Newcastle United in August, the Saudi Public Investment Fund chief sends a warning to top four rivals Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea

Al-Rumayyan said: "It's to be No.1, that’s the ambition. It is a mindset. It is how strong you are." And co-owner Amanda Staveley said: "There is pressure on everyone to deliver." Prime Video have had season-long access to behind the scenes at Newcastle following the revival of the Toon, from relegation candidates when Mike Ashely sold up, to their fourth-placed finish last season in just 20 months.

Newcastle have spent £340m rebuilding their squad, with Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes their £93m summer spending so far. Chief executive Darren Eales has revealed that playing in the Champions League will add “£45m to the bottom line” this season at least.

In the documentary Howe is filmed giving rousing dressing room speeches ahead of a league clash with Manchester United saying: “They want a quick game let’s f*****g give it to ‘em. Let’s blow them away with our running. Be intense in every action we do. Let’s go.” And he is also filmed swearing, blasting: “F*****g hell.” during training drills.

Howe and his side are in Atlanta this week with pre-season games against Chelsea and Brighton. And Kieran Trippier has backed Newcastle’s to go on a home run - after the squad bonded over a game of baseball.

The England and Toon right back says beers are off limits during the work phase of United’s Premier League Summer Series trip to Atlanta. But they have had bonding time playing baseball and golf and watching the Atlanta Braves.

This week, the squad played a three-team baseball tournament at their Atlanta training base. Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Matt Targett, Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Lewis Miley, Nick Pope, Mark Gillespie and Jamaal Lascelles were on the winning side.

Trippier said: “I thought Darlow and Murphy were good which was a surprise. Jamaal? I expected better from some players, and others were a surprise. It was a good platform for getting to know each other.

“Beers? No. It is pre-season. We have had a couple of weeks off and now it is about working hard and getting ready for a touch demanding season. Make no mistake, we will be ready.”

Howe has refused to put a number on United’s recruitment plans, with Tino Livramento their next target, plus a couple of defensive loans. Howe said: “A number is difficult because as soon as I say it it puts ourselves under pressure. I hope we can do more business. It won’t be loads coming through the door but hopefully it will be quality over quantity.”

Jamaal Lewis is close to securing a loan move to Watford. Keeper Karl Darlow is wanted by Leeds and “that is likely to happen this week.” Howe added: “He has been an incredible servant to the club but we can’t carry five keepers in our squad.”
