Netflix has made a major change to its pricing structure which is bad news for people who don't want to view adverts. The streaming service has removed its 'Basic' tier of subscription.

It means that in order to avoid paying the Standard £10.99 tier of subscription, you will have to pay £4.99 a month but you'll be forced to watch adverts.

It means that other services like Amazon Prime Video and could be a better alternative as both services are yet to offer adverts in its basic plans.

And the good news is that you can get both thanks to special offers being given to new customers right now.

Disney Plus is offering 12 months for the price of 10 in its latest offering while new Amazon Prime customers could get a free 30-day trial.

How Netflix changed its basic subscription tiers

Before the shake-up, there were two basic tiers of Netflix pricing available for potential Netflix customers: the “Basic” tier and the “Standard with Ads” tier.

According to Netflix, the "Standard with Ads” tier – which costs £4.99 - is advert-supported with some movies and TV shows unavailable.

You can watch show on 2 supported devices at a time and watch in Full HD.

Netflix has significantly changed its basic tier of subscription since the “Basic with Ads” tier was introduced in 2022.

For £4.99 a month, subscribers could watch Netflix but were forced to sit through several minutes of adverts an hour.

However this later changed in April 2023 with Netflix increasing the video quality from 720p to 1080p, and allowing for two simultaneous streams. This brought forth the name change to “Standard with Ads” tier.

The Basic tier, which has since been scrapped, costed £6.99 a month and allowed people to watch series and movies without adverts.

But they were limited to 720p video quality, and they couldn’t use the subscription to any other device.

For customers who didn’t want to watch through adverts, the Basic tier was the obvious choice but now this is unavoidable unless you want to pay £10.99 a month.

Which Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ plans don’t have adverts?

Most basic plans from streaming services in the UK don’t force subscribers to watch adverts when they watch a series or a movie but that is changing rapidly.

Netflix’s ‘Standard with Ads’ costs £4.99 a month but you will be limited to the number of movies and shows available.

You can stream in full 1080p HD quality but only use the account on two devices.

To get no adverts, you’ll have to sign up to the Standard tier which is £10.99 a month which is like the advert tier plan but with unlimited advert-free movies, TV shows, and mobile games.

You can also share the account with one other person who doesn’t live in the same house as you.

Disney Plus pricing costs £7.99 per month in the UK. This is a 30-day rolling contract that lets you cancel at any time.

At the time of writing, Disney+ has yet to introduce ads with its Basic tier in the UK but that is set to change.

Disney has already introduced ad-supported streaming on its basic tier of subscription, and it expected that something similar will roll out in the UK very soon.

That means expect something similar to what Netflix has rolled out with its Standard with Ads tier in the UK.

Disney Plus has yet to confirm whether the UK pricing will work in the same way ...but it might be a good time to lock in your current ad-free pricing with an annual plan to avoid any turmoil when these changes eventually make their way across the pond in 2023.

One thing is certain: Disney Plus adverts are on the way very soon.

Amazon Prime Video offers ad-free viewing to most of its shows except for shows that are part of its Freevee service.

Freevee launched its ad-supported service in 2022 after its merger with Amazon. Shows that have the label “Freevee” will feature ads that are interlaced in the show.

But that could also change soon as well. Reports from the Wall Street Journal claim that Amazon has been exploring ad-supported tiers meaning Amazon Prime adverts could be around the corner.

These include showing more ads to existing customers and introducing an ad-free alternative for an additional fee.
