Heartbreak for Normal People star Paul Mescal as beloved family member dies

Normal People star Paul Mescal's grandmother Mairéad has sadly died aged 86.

She died at University Hospital Limerick on July 12, with her death confirmed in a notice on RIP.ie.

"Mairéad died peacefully on 12th July 2023 at University Hospital Limerick, after a long illness, bravely borne," the notice read.

“Predeceased by her beloved husband Michael and infant son Michael. Mairéad will be sadly missed by her loving family, daughter Mary, sons Paul, Paudie, Derry, Mike and John, daughters-in-law Dearbhla, Muireann, Karina and Nora & son-in-law Paul.”

It continued: “She will also be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Paul, Donnacha, Morgan, Wayne, Luke, Aoife, Nell, Seán, Jenya, Aoibhínn, Clodagh, Conor, Paraic, Joe and Darragh Jim, sister Anna, brothers PJ and Frank, sister-in-law Vinnie, god-daughter Helen, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends.”

Paul's mother, Dearbhla, who is currently battling cancer, took to her Instagram page to pay tribute to her 'precious and calm' mother-in-law.

"You hear jokes about mother in laws & the difficulties this relationship holds. I can say from the bottom of my heart that my relationship with Mairead was precious & calm," she wrote.

“To our children, their cousins & all us adults she became ‘Granny Clare’ & was pure joy. She had a chuckle that lit a room, wisdom to share & a gentle hug that enveloped you.”

She continued: "She was quick-witted & very aware of the world around her & had a strength that her generation is known for.

"I truly hope I become like her & if my future brings me the joy of ‘mother in lawing’ or whatever the new name for this role becomes I want to take the gifts Mairead shared, the light she was & the giggle that made you feel the sun, to become a woman that will hold my children’s partners gently in my heart forever & always. As a family we will forever feel her love & hold our memories of her deep & still."

Earlier this year, Paul's mum gave fans an update on her health after returning to the hospital following her battle with multiple myeloma.

Following blood tests, she received positive news and said: "So I’ve just finished in the hospital. I’ve to go for an MRI. Date to be confirmed, but that’s okay.

"Bloods done, all still really good numbers so very, very happy about that part and we’ll get to the root of the pain but it’s so wonderful to be cared for by this amazing team."

Once she got home, Dearbhla updated followers and admitted she was feeling "less anxious" over the pain because she knows they’ll get to the bottom of it.

"I’m home and feeling less anxious. I know we will get to the root of it, which is really good," she said.
