Myleene Klass recalls 'barbaric' miscarriages as pregnancy loss laws changed

Myleene Klass made history today by changing pregnancy loss laws as she recalled her experience suffering four 'torturous' miscarriages in recent years.

The former Hear'Say singer, 45, has spent four years campaigning for changes to UK miscarriage laws with Labour MP Olivia Blake and has been left feeling relieved and overjoyed as a number of major changes for women have been approved.

The former singer said she has turned the 'pain of four miscarriages into power', after it was announced the British Government will be implementing the changes for which she has spent over four years campaigning.

An advocate for women's health, Myleene has been backing changes to the Women’s Health Strategy in the UK.

One of the changes was a call to ensure women will not have to suffer up to three miscarriages before receiving help – an issue with which she is personally acquainted with after suffering four miscarriages in her lifetime.

On Saturday, the UK government announced a package of new measures to 'boost the health and wellbeing of women and girls', including a pilot scheme that will see medical intervention for women after every miscarriage.

The changes were unveiled in the long-awaited Pregnancy Loss Review - an independent report on NHS miscarriage care and how it can be improved, which came after campaigning from baby loss charity Tommy's, who Myleene works with.

After the changes were passed, Myleene shared: "I wanted to use my voice for something really powerful, but it turns out we’ve just gone on to move a mountain."

She described the changes as 'one of my proudest achievements' because British women will no longer go through the miscarriage 'hell' she suffered, which was documented in her Bafta-nominated film Myleene Klass: Miscarriage And Me.

Myleene detailed the 'barbaric' trauma she went through during the four miscarriages she suffered and explained how she was left 'shaking with fear' after being given the devastating news.

Detailing what changes needed to be made as she recalled her own trauma, Myleene shared: "You're standing there in your surgical socks shaking with the fear of it all and the upset, with your dead baby on the scan, and you've got to decide, "do I commit them to ashes at the tick of a box, or do I put them into a slide?"'

"How do you refer to the baby that's been lost in the paper work you have to fill in? It's torturous," she told Mail Online.

"The products of pregnancy, "how would you like them to be disposed of? Would you like ashes and prayers or would you like slides and scientific contribution? It's barbaric and it's all going to stop now. The fact I've been campaigning for it for years and now I'm actually saying there's a full stop, it's incredible."

She told PA: "As a result of having to live through this nightmare, I’ve turned the pain into power and so much good has come from it.

She continued, "My daughter calls them her angel brothers and sisters, it’s like they’ve got a voice. I didn’t want to go through this but I’ve managed to find something that means that so many will benefit from it.

"I think that this is something that I owed to myself all those years ago, every time I lost another baby and didn’t know where to go, I never knew that this is where it would lead me.

"I think a lot of people lose heart with campaigning, but I couldn’t give up because I’d started it."
