A man who can't drink alcohol as he's undergoing chemotherapy for a brain tumour claims he was turned away from a Manchester bar for being "too drunk" due to a limp brought on by his illness.

David Twentyman, 40, from Old Trafford, was in Manchester city centre with four friends as they celebrated the birth of a friend's child when he alleges he was prevented from entering Slug and Lettuce in Spinningfields on July 14.

He said he has been undergoing treatment for a year and now has a visible limp caused by the brain tumour on the left side of his head, which has an effect on the right side of his body.

At around 10pm, four of his friends "walked straight in" to the bar, before David claims he was stopped by a member of the door staff and accused of being too drunk.

David, who is currently on chemotherapy after undergoing a recent round of radiotherapy, said he cannot drink alcohol because of the medication he's on.

"I was lagging behind because of my leg," he said. "When I got to the door, they wouldn't let me in. The doorman said I was too drunk. One of my mates came out as I was explaining to the door staff that I don't drink, but he just wasn't having any of it. He just kept saying 'no, you're drunk'. He just wasn't listening.

"I even lifted up my cap to show him my hair loss and he just wasn't having any of it. It's something I'm really self conscious about so it was very embarrassing. There were people walking past. My mate was getting more upset and the whole group just decided to leave. I stayed out for a bit after, but I was a little bit knocked back by the whole thing and decided to call it a night soon after.

"This is the first time this has happened to me and I've been really upset by it. It should have been a good night celebrating, but it ruined the night for me."

In a statement, Slug and Lettuce bosses said they were "satisfied" door staff acted in a "responsible and professional" manner," reported the Manchester Evening News.

It said they were open to having a conversation with David, adding: "We have viewed the body cameras of the door team from the evening and are satisfied our team acted in a responsible and professional manner when guests who came to the venue were refused entry.

"We would be very happy to meet with any of the guests who were denied entry should they want to understand the reasons for our actions in more detail."

The Mirror has contacted Slug and Lettuce for comment.
