UK airports set to be the busiest this summer from London to Manchester

The UK's busiest airport had 348 passengers for everyone who made it to the country's quietest, according to the 2023 Busiest Airport Report by ePower Trucks.

This year's ranking of the most popular airports based on the amount of passengers, the amount of airlines and total destinations found the Heathrow in West London is the busiest, with a total of 61,599,196 passengers, 86 airlines and 171 possible destinations.

Kirkwall is the least busy with 177,248, two airlines and 11 destinations which are all in the UK, while capital city airports like Belfast and Cardiff have a combined 6,283,830 passengers, 25 airlines and 49 destinations, according to new research.

While Heathrow may be twice as busy as the second place airport in the list, it is also has a much greater capacity, with four functioning terminals.

Considering the population of London, there is no surprise that Heathrow Airport is the most popular.

Queen Elizabeth II opened the central terminal room in 1955, marking the airport's importance on the UK's aviation scene. More recently it has appeared in major films like Love Actually, which began with a montage from the travel hub.

Heathrow is served by 86 airlines and has a total of 171 destinations to choose from, making it the go-to airport for international travel.

The next most popular airport is another London one, Gatwick. It handles long-haul and short-haul flights. Gatwick also has 47 airlines and 165 destinations to visit. Despite them being in this position, they still have 28,760,196 fewer passengers a year than Heathrow.

3. Manchester - 23,369,770

Manchester is the airport outside of London to break into the top five. Its extensive scale and amenities enable it to cater to a greater number of long-distance flights.

The airport has 50 airlines, and 146 possible destinations people can visit. Manchester acts as a major international hub for travellers from the north of England.

4. London Stansted - 23,319,523

Stansted Airport, London's third major airport, consistently achieves comparable passenger volumes to Manchester Airport, despite its single runway and terminal configuration.

This airport serves as a favoured choice for individuals, especially in the northern areas of London or the less populated regions of East England. Despite having a relatively small 10 airlines operating from it, it has flights to 153 countries.

5. London Luton - 13,322,000

Situated approximately 35 miles north of Central London, this airport has a low number of airlines at just eight, but still has flights to 88 possible destinations.

Humberside is situated in North Lincolnshire, which is an area away from major metropolitan areas resulting in less air time and fewer flights compared to busier airports. It has just four airlines and four destinations.

3. Newquay/Cornwall - 461,148

This airport is located on the coast of Cornwall which is loved by tourists during the summer months but still rural and sparsely populated. The airport has four airlines operating at it and five possible destinations.

4. Norwich - 528,153

Norwich serves international flights but only to six destinations, but they are quite reduced in destinations (6), they do more domestic flights which proves why it’s less busy. They also have 6 airlines.

5. Bournemouth - 693,798

Bournemouth is away from major metropolitan areas but not a million miles away from the more sizeable Southampton Airport and Gatwick, which accounts for its three airlines and 17 possible destinations.
