Jurgen Klopp claims it would be a "great honour" to become the Germany manager - but wants to respect his contract with Liverpool.

Current boss Hansi Flick is in danger of losing his job after winning just half of his 24 games in charge. Germany were knocked out of last year's World Cup in Qatar during the group stage and suffered a round-of-16 exit to England at Euro 2020.

Germans are keen for Klopp, one of the country's most successful managers in history, to answer their SOS call and take the job heading into next year's Euros. Germany will host the tournament, 18 years after they staged the 2006 World Cup.

Yet Klopp is refusing to leave Liverpool. The Champions League winner's contract doesn't expire until June 2026, and he wants to rebuild the squad after a difficult 2022/23 campaign. The Reds finished fifth in the Premier League and failed to win a major trophy.

"The job of national coach is and would be a great honour - there's no question about that," Klopp told Sky in Germany when asked about his future. "The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty.

"I can't just leave Liverpool now and say I'll take over Germany for a short time. That doesn't work and the request isn't even there. If I'm supposed to do that at some point, then I have to be available and I'm not currently. I have a responsibility towards the club.

"Basically, it's an interesting job. But I don't know yet whether I'll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open."

Klopp has achieved huge success since joining Liverpool in October 2015. He's won the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, European Super Cup, Club World Cup and the Community Shield during his near eight-year spell.

Klopp's biggest achievement at Liverpool is that Premier League title, which ended Liverpool's 30-year wait to become champions of England again. He's also reached two other Champions League finals with the Reds, losing both to Real Madrid.

Former Liverpool and Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has called for Flick to leave his role. Hamann said last month: "The danger that this will go wrong with him is so great that you have to act now. It's going in the wrong direction at a huge pace.

"(He has) lost the trust of the players. If it's right in the team, then the boys do it themselves, because they say, 'We'll go through fire for him'. That's not the case at the moment."

Hamann believes former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann should get the Germany job. He added: "It can't get any worse than it is at the moment, which is why I would also greet Julian Nagelsmann with a kiss on the hand."
