Major League Baseball history was made as 12 teams scored in double digits in an offensive showing that hadn’t been seen in 129 years.

On Tuesday, 12 franchises remarkably scored in double digits, including a Modern Era record four games in which both teams hit over 10 runs. Three games also ended 11-10 for the first time in history in an incredible day for offences around MLB.

The trio of games that finished 11-10 saw the San Francisco Giants edge the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Mets beat the Chicago White Sox, and the Kansas City Royals narrowly emerging victorious against the Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Atlanta Braves in a 16-13 thriller.

The D-Backs’ win over the Braves was one of the most exciting games of the 2023 season. The teams combined for 12 runs in the first inning and a half, while there were seven lead changes over the course of the nine innings.

The top four hitters in Arizona's lineup - Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll, Christian Walker - were in sensational form as the group combined for three doubles, a triple, two homers and 12 RBI. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs finished as the day’s top scorers as they pummelled the Washington Nationals 17-3.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins won their games 10-3, while the Cleveland Guardians beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1. With 12 teams scoring 10-plus runs, Tuesday’s action was a Modern Era (since 1900) record.

It was the second-most number of teams with double-digit runs in one day after the 13 teams did so on July 4 1894, per the Elias Sports Bureau. The last time 12 teams put up so many runs in one day came back on May 30 1884.

On that day 129 years ago, there were 24 games on that day compared to 15 official games on Tuesday as the Giants and Reds finished the Monday game that was suspended for weather. On July 4 1894 - before the American League and National League merged to form MLB - there were 12 teams playing in the NL but each played a doubleheader.

The previous Modern Era record was nine temas with double-digit runs back on August 23 1998 and July 7 2004. Even before Tuesday, the only other days featuring four games in which both teams scored 10-plus runs were July 4 and July 9 in 1894.

Tuesday’s monumental showing failed to beat the record for the highest-scoring day in MLB history. Tuesday saw 199 runs scored while the record is 222 on June 10 1962.

Ultimately, the 2023 MLB season has seen offense thrive as teams are averating 4.58 runs per game - the highest rate in a 162-game season since 2019. The San Diego Padres came agonisingly close to making it 13 teams to score at least 10 runs, but they could only secure a 9-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
