Stuart Broad has taken his 600th Test wicket for England - becoming just the fifth cricketer to join the exclusive club.

Broad reached the landmark by dismissing Australia batter Travis Head for 48 during the first day of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Wednesday afternoon.

Only four cricketers have taken more Test wickets than Broad - Sri Lankan hero Muttiah Muralitharan (800), the late, great Australian Shane Warne (708), Broad's international colleague James Anderson (688 and counting) and Indian icon Anil Kumble (619).

Broad is enjoying a sensational career with England. The 37-year-old seamer, who is the son of former England batter Chris, has taken 841 international wickets across all formats and was part of the team that won the 2010 T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Broad will be fondly remembered for being a thorn in the side of the Aussies, as no Englishman has taken more wickets in the Ashes (149). Ian Botham claimed 148 Test wickets against Australia, but only 128 of those came in Ashes Tests. Broad has won four Ashes series (2009, 2010/11, 2013, 2015) and would love to celebrate triumph No.5 this summer.

England currently trail 2-1 in the series after defeats at Edgbaston and Lord's. The hosts won the third Test at Headingley last time out but will need to win at Old Trafford and The Oval to regain the Ashes. Anything less will see Australia keep hold of the urn.

Many fans hoped David Warner would be Broad's 600th Test scalp. Remarkably, Broad has dismissed the Australia opener 17 times in Test cricket. Yet his England team-mate Chris Woakes was responsible for dismissing Warner at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Broad was tipped to reach 600 Test wickets by former England captain Michael Atherton after he claimed his 500th scalp three years ago. "When you get left out, that's when you find out a little bit more about yourself," Atherton told Sky Sports.

"Some players, when they get to that stage and get left out, they might just say, 'Well, I've done enough with my career'. But clearly Stuart Broad, with that fire in the belly he showed, has got more to come and he doesn't just want to get 500 wickets."

Another former England captain Michael Vaughan was also full of praise for Broad back in 2020. Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: "He's a great, not just of English cricket, but of the game. He's got 500 wickets, maybe will get to 600."

Anderson added: "Stuart is an absolute credit to himself for the work he's put in the last few years, he is incredible to watch and a real inspiration, not just for the younger members but for me too. "There's a good chance he'll take more wickets more than me.

"Why can't he play as long as me? He's in good shape and he leads the attack brilliantly and can take as many wickets as he wants."
