Personality tests can be a lot of fun and a great way to think about your own personal strengths and attributes, and what sort of positive influence you might be having on those around you, without even realising it.

One personality test however is not like the others and even includes an ominous warning for those brave enough to give it a shot for themselves.

The notorious Dark Triad test is a personality test that scans for three very particular traits: narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

This can of course be very useful for those whose job it is to understand the darker workings of the human mind, but the results may prove disturbing for some.

According to an introduction on the website IDRlabs.com: "The Dark Triad is a personality inventory that explores the socially undesirable traits of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy.

"The Dark Triad test is often used by police and the courts, in psychiatric wards and evaluations, and even in big corporations. Studies have shown that people who score high on the Dark Triad are more likely to commit crimes or get in trouble with the law and also more likely to cause social distress among their friends or problems in their workplace.

"On the other hand, studies have also shown that Dark Triad individuals are often perceived as possessing leadership qualities and that they have high social status and comparative ease of attaining desirable sex partners."

Narcissism is a term used to describe individuals with an excessive view of their own importance, who exhibit a self-centred preoccupation with their own needs.

Those with Machiavellianism personalities are defined by their cunning, manipulative personalities and ruthless obsession with gaining power above all else.

Meanwhile, psychopathy refers to a neuropsychiatric disorder marked by a lack of empathy and emotional responses, as well as low levels of control over personal behaviour.

Before you can try the free test for yourself, however, you'll need to accept a warning about the possibility of learning potentially distressing things about yourself.

If you feel up for pressing on, then you'll be presented with a series of 36 statements and asked to share exactly how much you agree or disagree with them.

This telling test includes statements such as "Others should pay special attention to me", and "I am especially motivated towards making friends with famous people".

Once you've answered all 36, you'll be presented with a score that is said to indicate your levels of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy, comparing this to the "average person".

Of course, this test is said to be solely intended for educational purposes, and therefore shouldn't be treated as professional or certified advice.
