A woman who is weeks away from celebrating her 105th birthday says her secret to living so long is red wine.

Betty Regnard, resident at the Westhaven Care Home who will turn 105 on August 4, praised the drink for giving her a long and healthy life. She also added how the thing she is looking forward to most on her birthday is a cake.

Ahead of her big day, Betty's carers have put out a call to members of the community to help mark a milestone birthday with a special touch. The team is rallying members of the public to send in birthday cards to make her day extra special.

The care home is hoping to receive 105 birthday cards in time for Betty's birthday bash.

Nichola Forster, activities coordinator, who is leading the charge for Betty's birthday, said this is an age she has never celebrated in all her years of working with the elderly.

She said: “I've been working with the elderly for 15 years and the oldest I've ever celebrated was 103. She's the first I've known to turn 105.

"We've got a few 100-year-olds here at the moment but this is the first time we've celebrated a 105th birthday.”

Claude Regnard, 72, Betty's only son, shared that his mum had came to the UK from France when she was 27 years old, around Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) in 1945. But Betty, who was originally from the Pyrenees, had not come over with her husband, Francis, initially, writes the Liverpool Echo.

He said: "My dad had been flown across during the war and then she joined him. He soon later joined the British Army."

"Much of the life in France was destroyed because of the war."

Despite not having any skills in seamstressing, Betty was able to find a job as a seamstress and did it for a "good number of years."

Now, the Care Home team is hoping to make her feel extra special by inviting someone from France to join in on the celebration.

Nichola added: “We had 100th birthday parties and she came out and told them she was 105 and to not forget about her.”

Betty said she is looking forward to her birthday and is most excited for her birthday cake.

In addition to the community's support, the Care Home team is also hoping that The Lord Mayor of Liverpool will be able to make a guest appearance at the birthday bash.

Nichola is encouraging those who would like to send a birthday card, to send it over to the address: 10 Lighthouse Road, Hoylake, CH47 2EB.

She said any birthday card sent would be "greatly appreciated”.
