A huge solar storm is on its way to Earth, and it could cause an “internet apocalypse”, experts believe.

Experts are claiming that the Sun is going to hit the peak of its latest Solar Cycle in 2025, and a solar storm will be heading Earth's way as a result.

And while this is nothing unusual, as it has happened 25 times since records began in 1755, experts are panicking because the current cycle has “ramped up much faster” than normal, and has seen “more sunspots and eruptions than experts had forecast”.

It is already well known that solar storms contain electro magnetic pulses, which can cause devastating effects on Earth if big enough, reports Daily Star.

According to a spokesman from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: “Tracking and predicting the Sun's solar cycles gives a rough idea of the frequency of space weather storms of all types – from radio blackouts to geomagnetic storms and solar radiation storms – and it's used by many industries to gauge the potential impact of space weather on Earth.

“Some grid systems may experience complete collapse or blackouts.”

Fears over an “internet apocalypse” have ramped up as a result after 2021 comments from expert Sangeetha Adbu Jyothi resurfaced recently in a research paper about the issue.

But she has since spoken out to claim that she “regrets” using the phrase, and that it “just got too much attention”.

Despite the dampening, social media is running wild with talk of the end of the internet.

One person tweeted: “Man if solar flare hit Earth in 2025, when Internet apocalypse happens then we'll all finally get to touch some grass.”

A second wrote: “if the internet apocalypse happens before I meet my soulmate, I will start the first catastrophe this nation ever saw.”

A third commented: “Internet apocalypse is crazy. Scarier than an actual one I’ll be honest.”

NASA has not yet commented on the possibility of the end of the internet being caused by a 2025 solar storm.
