Woman dies after being thrown from horse spooked by motorbike coming around bend

A woman in her 50s has died after her horse was spooked by a motorcyclist.

Police were called to Bollands Hill, near Seend, in Wiltshire at around 3.40pm last Sunday afternoon following reports a woman had fallen from her horse.

The force said the horse was spooked by a motorcycle which was approaching from around a blind bend. The horse rider, a woman from Melksham, sustained serious injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Both the motorcyclist and the horse suffered minor injuries and no arrests have been made.

Wiltshire Police said that the woman's next of kin have been informed.

Police are asking that any witnesses to the incident contact their serious collision investigation team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 221. "Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time," police said.

The full statement from the police read: "A woman has died following an incident involving a horse and a motorcyclist on Bollands Hill near Seend yesterday afternoon (09/07).

"At around 3.40pm, we responded following reports that a horse and rider had fallen after the horse was spooked by a motorcycle approaching from a blind bend.

"Sadly, the horse rider – a woman in her 50s from Melksham – suffered injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

"Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

"Both the motorcyclist and the horse suffered minor injuries. No arrests have been made.

"Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the serious collision investigation team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 221 of yesterday’s date. Alternatively, they can contact the team directly at [email protected]."

Many people took to social media following the tragedy to offer their condolences. One person wrote on Facebook: "So very sorry to hear this, what sad news," and another said: "Terrifying. My thoughts are with all involved."
