Indiana Jones cameos you forgot about - from Tom Hanks' son to Spider-Man star

Indiana Jones made his debut in the film series of the same name more than four decades ago, having been first introduced to viewers in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

The archaeologist - played by Harrison Ford - has since appeared in four sequels, including having most recently returned for another adventure in the Dial of Destiny (2023).

The previous films - created by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg - saw Indy interact with various characters during his escapades, including love interests.

There has also been a few cameos, so we've taken a look at just some of the appearances you may have forgotten, with there an entry for each of the previous four films.

Alfred Molina

Alfred Molina, now 70, made his film debut in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He played Satipo, the ill-fated guide who double-crosses Indy in the film's iconic opening sequence.

The actor expressed gratitude over the role in an interview with the AV Club in 2014, recalling that he had been "broke" at the time and was expecting a baby with his partner.

Alfred added: "[Fans] are still coming up to me saying [my line] 'throw me the idol, I throw you the whip.' I'm delighted. I've got a little corner of movie history that's mine."

He went on to appear in films like Letter to Brezhnev (1985), Frida (2002) and The Da Vinci Code (2006). His TV credits include Feud: Bette and Joan (2017) and Three Pines (2022).

Alfred's best known for playing Otto Octavius - also known by the moniker Doctor Octopus - in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and more recently in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

Dan Aykroyd

Dan Aykroyd, now 71, made a brief appearance in the Temple of Doom (1984). He played Art Weber, the army officer who escorts Indy to a plane when he flees Shanghai.

He told ABC News in 2013 that he was "old friends" with director Steven and previously told WPBA-Atlanta ahead of the film's release: "I was dying to get involved in this thing."

The actor said that Steven and George are in the scene too as "missionaries in the background." He added: "It was kind of a fun night cause they were wrapping up [filming then]".

Dan had been a cast member and writer on Saturday Night Live prior to the role and made his debut as Ray Stantz in Ghostbusters (1984) the same year the film was released.

He's reprised the latter role in sequels in that film series and his other acting credits include The Blues Brothers (1980), Trading Places (1983), and Driving Miss Daisy (1989).

River Phoenix

The late River Phoenix was part of the Last Crusade (1989). He played a younger Indiana in the film's opening sequence, which explores some of the character's backstory.

He was said to have performed most of his own stunts and credited Harrison - whom he had worked with on The Mosquito Coast (1986) - with helping him get into character.

According to trivia on IMDb, River was later offered the chance to reprise the role in the TV show the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles but declined as he'd begun a film career.

River had already starred in Stand by Me (1986) by the time he played Indy and went on to appear in films like My Own Private Idaho (1991) prior to his death, aged 23, in 1993.

Chet Hanks

Chet Hanks, now 32, had a cameo in the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). He played a student who interacts with Indy when he drives through a library on a motorbike.

The actor - who is the eldest child of Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson - has some dialogue in the scene and he is listed among the cast in the film's end credits sequence.

The project was one of Chet's first acting roles, with him having since appeared in films like Larry Crowne (2011), Fantastic Four (2015) and more recently Greyhound (2020).

He's also been in several TV shows, having had recurring roles on the likes of Shameless, Empire and Your Honor. Chet has also appeared in the show Curb Your Enthusiasm.
