A video has captured the shocking moment two air force planes crashed mid-air, before one plunges to the ground, leaving two pilots dead.

The collision happened over central Colombia yesterday as the nation's military were thought to be training for an aeronautical fair.

Five planes can be seen flying together when one of the planes veers towards another and hits it, The Sun reports.

The plane then bursts into flames and spirals downwards before crashing on the airfield below.

Colombia's Air Force tweeted: "An accident occurred at the Apiay Air Base, Meta, involving two T-27 Tucano training aircraft, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

They added: "Pilots don't die, they just fly higher."

One of the dead pilots has been identified as Lietenant Colonel Mario Andres Espinosa Gonzalez.

The name of the second pilot who died has not yet been released.

It's believed the air force pilots were training for the upcoming Aeronautical Fair, set to take place between July 12 and July 16.

It's not known whether the fair will now go ahead as planned.

In May this year, three children and a baby were found alive more than two weeks after their plane crashed in the Columbian jungle.

The four siblings lost their mum when the Cessna aircraft they were flying in crashed into the jungle canopy on May 1.

An indigenous leader and the pilot were also killed in the smash, but the four children - Lesly, aged 13, Soleiny, nine, Tien Noriel, four, and little Cristin, who turned one while lost, all survived and were eventually found by soldiers.
