Apple recently revealed its next-generation operating system - named iOS 17 - at its Developers Conference in Cupertino. This feature-packed upgrade will be officially released in September but there's a very easy way to try it before anyone else. It's almost certain that Apple will release a beta version of this operating system to the public later this month which means those who sign up will get early access to all the latest and greatest features.

Apple always pushes out this test version of its software a few months before the real release with it giving the firm a chance to discover and fix any bugs and glitches.

Although it's not the finished software, it's still an easy way to give iOS 17 and all of the shiny new upgrades a go before September.

You'll find full details about the public beta here.

Because it's not the final build, Apple advises that users should not download the iOS 17 beta on their primary smartphone. Instead, to avoid any phone-crashing nightmares when you need to make a call or check emails, the software should ideally be installed on a secondary iPhone.

So what's new on iOS 17? Changes in this upcoming release include Personalised Contact Posters which appear when you make a call. These can be fully customised to suit your tastes with colours and font adaptable. It basically means when you ring friends, you chose what pops up on their screen.

The Messages app is improved thanks to a less cluttered look and the addition of Check In which sends an instant text when you arrive home safely so friends know you are OK.

Then there's a new StandBy mode that makes your iPhone more useful when it's sat on your desk with clocks, photo albums and calendars displayed on the screen.

Other extras launching in September include a new Journal app, fun animated reactions in FaceTime calls and Contact Drop which lets you share details with other iPhone owners by simply tapping the devices together.

iOS 17 will be free to download.
