Cyclist killed in Ibiza hit-and-run as police hunt driver with 'British plates'
A cyclist in Ibiza has been killed after a tragic hit-and-run accident involving a UK-plated Jeep Wrangler.
The victim has been named as 49-year-old Bernat Ribas, who is a well-known local sports enthusiast who had taken part in many cycling competitions over the years.
He was with another cyclist when he was hit on a road called Camino de Benimussa in the municipality of Sant Josep in the centre of the island.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene but sadly could do nothing to save him.
The coordinator of a local Facebook group, commenting on the hit-and-run accident, said late last night: "This evening a cyclist has been run over and killed in the Camino de Benimussa.
"The driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene. According to witnesses, it’s a 4x4 black convertible Jeep with a British number plate.
"The cyclist is Bernat Ribas. Rest in peace."
A friend of the dead man added: "Rest in peace, Bernat Ribas. You will always be remembered."
Police confirmed this morning that no arrests have yet been made as they are still searching for the vehicle.
A police source said: "Officers are still searching for the vehicle, which appears to be a UK-plated Jeep, and the driver involved. Witnesses said there were two people in the car, a man and a woman."
A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: "I can confirm a cyclist died in an accident involving a vehicle whose driver failed to stop at the scene.
"The incident happened around 8pm last night. No arrests have yet been made and the search for the vehicle and driver is continuing this morning."
Ibiza Town mayor Rafa Triguero tweeted after hearing the news: "It’s not only a cyclist on two wheels because the many lives of many families are on a bicycle.
"My sincerest condolences to the dead man’s family and friends and the cycling community."
