It was an on field rivalry that transformed into an off field friendship. And Darren Gough puts it all down to a toasted cheese and ham sandwich. It’s obvious from the way in which Gough talks about his friend Shane Warne, that we’re talking about somebody special, one of the greats.

“We got taken for dinner by a journalist called David Norrie, a lovely guy, Scottish guy,” told Gough as he was asked about how the blossoming friendship between the two bowlers developed.

“And he took us for a dinner to the poshest restaurant in Sydney on the beach. Now, he obviously didn't know me and Warnie at all. David has his mussels starter and his fish main course with a nice bottle of wine. Me and Warnie looked at each other, and we'd only just met by the way, and he goes, “Can I have a toasted cheese and ham sandwich?” I said me too please.”

The entire interview can be found on the most recent episode of Full Circle from bet365, as Adam Catterall and the former England fast bowler discuss the Ashes, his relationship with the late, great, Shane Warne, and his thoughts on Bazball and what to expect from the upcoming series.

Both Gough and Warne would love to be pulling on their boots this week as Lord’s hosts the second Test Match of the series. ‘Dazzler’ took 39 Test Match wickets at the home of cricket while the former Australian leg-spinner picked up 19 wickets in four Test matches at Lord’s against England.

Their respective countries will both be out for victory on Wednesday.

The 2023 Ashes series was billed as a potential thriller and the first Test at Edgbaston certainly lived up to the hype.

England stayed true to their ultra-aggressive gameplan, declaring their first innings late on day one, and that gamble appeared to have paid off when they reduced Australia to 227-8, chasing 281 for victory on the final day.

However, captain Pat Cummins and number 10 Nathan Lyon shared an unbroken stand of 55 to see the Aussies home and they have fond memories of recent Test visits to Lord's, winning by 405 runs in the 2015 Ashes before a battling draw in 2019.
