All drivers dread issues with their motors. You may look to the user manual for some top tips and expert suggestions when things go wrong, but it's likely you'll need some professional help if there's a major issue.

One driver has warned against making any knee-jerk decisions when it comes to your vehicle, after someone made a mistake that costs thousands of pounds to rectify.

The owner of a Mini Cooper noticed that her car washer fluid levels were low, so she went to a garage to buy more to top it up.

Yet when she'd completed the task, she was left confused as her engine was omitting an unusual blue cloud.

The windscreen washer light was also still flashing, leaving her even more dumbfounded.

When she took her car to a mechanic, they told her the bad news that she'd inadvertently caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to her beloved vehicle.

Unfortunately, she'd poured the washer fluid in the wrong place and had put it where motor oil is supposed to go.

This had left the Mini's engine covered in an unsightly greeny brown sludge, with the mistake costing up to £3,200 as the engine will need replacing.

The post was shared by Club BMW Voiture Allemande Région centre to warn other people not to make the same mistake - and people left horrified comments.

"We have the fool of the year", someone joked, but a Facebook user defended the woman writing: "It could happen to any of us."

Another said: "Dealerships should show customers the different important points of the vehicle like this when they're buying a car."

"You need to read the car manual", someone suggested.
