Former EastEnders villain unrecognisable in new role after big direction change
Toby-Alexander Smith looks worlds away from EastEnders' evil Gray Atkins as he performs a complete role reversal.
The 32-year-old, who played the villainous character on the soap for three years before he left Albert Square last year, has a very different look.
It appears the actor has landed a part in a major period drama - and his fans are hoping it's the Netflix series Bridgerton.
Taking to Instagram, the new dad shared a photo of himself dressed in a very traditional costume, consisting of a white cravat and matching shirt worn underneath a blue waistcoat.
He also donned knee-high boots worn over a pair of fitted trousers for the ultimate regal look.
EastEnders' Jake Wood's snap of son has fans pointing out the pair's likenessIn the snap, Toby-Alexander sits on an elegant chair with one hand sleekly touching his knee as he looks at the camera appearing with a longer hairstyle.
Teasing his new television or movie role, he captioned the image: "Who’s the new guy?"
Fans of the star wasted no time in speculating which period drama Toby-Alexander will be starring in as one person wrote: "Please say Bridgerton."
A second stated: "Hoping this is Bridgerton!", while a third chimed in with: A Bridgerton perhaps?"
"@Toby_alexander_smith in Bridgerton would be a dream come true!" added another.
After last year welcoming daughter Bonnie with his fiancée, Emmerdale actor Amy Walsh, he's keeping himself busy.
While Toby is used to being in front of the camera, he's also been working on a project which puts him firmly behind the lens.
On his Instagram story, the dad-of-one shared a photo of the front page of a manuscript, written on a computer.
He told Digital Spy what he has been up to, saying: "Changing nappies, breast pumps and not getting any sleep.
"It’s all good. I’m very happy using this time now just to be present with Amy and Bonnie and I’m just loving every second of it.
EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy shows off grey hair and says 'it doesn't matter'"Who knows what’s around the corner but for right now I’m very happy to just be a full-time dad."
Toby initially signed up for play Gray for six months, but soon he found himself the centre of a disturbing plot-line, when Gray murdered wife Chantelle, pushing her onto an upturned knife in a dishwasher in 2020.
Gray then went on to murder Tina Carter and Kush Kazemi, becoming Walford’s resident serial killer.
But in March last year, soap fans saw Gray's frightening killing spree come to a dramatic end as police officers handcuffed him on Albert Square after a dramatic showdown with Whitney Dean.
The actor hasn't ruled out Gray's return to EastEnders, but doesn't think fans want to see a redemption arc.
He told The Sun: "I don’t know, I’m not sure the audience would be too happy about seeing Gray redeemed, I have to say.
"I think justice needs to be seen and Gray needs to get his comeuppance. Who knows if we’ll ever see him again but it’s EastEnders so you never know."
