Jon Kay says BBC Breakfast co-host Sally Nugent has to help dress him - as he is colour blind so can't tell what ties look good on TV.

TV host Jon, who has now been in the role a year, relies on Sally for his fashion advice in the morning and sometimes needs to change moments before going on air.

Grinning, he said: "In the morning I'll be like, 'Sal, does this tie go?'

And she goes, 'Ah, no.' She guides me. She's like my carer."

Jon has settled into his role as one of the main hosts on the show - but the one problem is he is now drinking six or seven coffees every morning before 9am.

The 53-year-old joined the show as Dan Walker's replacement in July last year.

He said: "I drink a ludicrous amount of coffee every morning. I have one when I get in about a quarter to five. And we have our meeting, and then i'll have another one before we go on air, and then have four or five more during the programme."

Jon and Sally will host from a new BBC Breakfast studio for the first time on Monday. The multipurpose studio, the first for the show in over a decade, will be shared with BBC Sport and the sofa rotates 180 degrees to give two different setups that can be used.

It also features seven cameras, including one which is positioned outside of the studio to show the workers around it when the show starts, as well as an array of 83 different lights and new giant tower screens and a seven metre long "catwalk" which can be used for graphics and presenting videos and data.

Jon said: "We used to be upstairs at the far end of a corridor and kind of hidden away at the end of, and now we're right in the heart of BBC North.

So it means that when visitors arrive, they'll see the studio, and people will work around us. Everybody in the building and space will share it. I think it feels like we're quite a statement right in the heart of the space where we're broadcasting."
