Paul Mescal has revealed his impressive body transformation as he limbers up for his iconic Gladiator role.

The Normal People star, 27, will play Lucius, the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Roman emperor Commodus from Ridley Scott’s 2000 historical drama, in the forthcoming sequel.

Fans can't wait to see Paul's transformation, but they got a sneak peak of it on Instagram today when his fan page shared a clip of the Irishman at the gym.

Wearing just a pair of shorts and Calvin Klein boxers, the actor can be seen lifting two weighty dumbbells as he worked up a sweat.

The video was captioned: "Paul training hard for Gladiator 2."

Fans flocked to the comments section, with many praising Paul for how good he looked.

However, one of his followers was slightly more subdued, sharing: "See now he’s a beautiful fella but I know I am getting old because my first thought was that I hope he is getting good food and rest as well."

Production recently began in Morocco for Gladiator 2 and has now moved to Malta, with a photo circulating on social media of Paul and actor Pedro Pascal posing together on a beach.

After twenty years of failed attempts, acclaimed director Ridley is finally making a sequel to the Russell Crow classic, which will star Paul, Pedro, Joseph Quinn, Barry Keoghan and Denzel Washington.

Paul wowed crowds earlier his year when he walked the red carpet at the Olivier Awards in London.

As expected, the Irish actor triumphed for his stunning performance as Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire following a sell-out run at the Almeida Theatre, London.

Speaking at the annual theatre awards, he announced his beloved mother Dearbhla was battling cancer and couldn't make the bash at London's Royal Albert Hall

After thanking his co-stars and colleagues, Paul made sure he mentioned his dad - who was watching at home - and of course his supportive mum, who is currently undergoing treatment.

He said in his speech he wanted to thank his parents "who never said no", before telling his mum: "I hope you get better soon."

In May, Dearbhla shared a health update, saying: "So I’ve just finished in the hospital. I’ve to go for an MRI. Date to be confirmed, but that’s okay.

"Bloods done, all still really good numbers so very, very happy about that part and we’ll get to the root of the pain but it’s so wonderful to be cared for by this amazing team."
