Max George has revealed that his girlfriend Maisie Smith was left living after his fake proposal to her while on The Chase.

Former EastEnders star Maisie, 21, jumped out of her chair with excitement after beau Max, 34, pretended to propose while on The Chase Celebrity Special.

Maisie and Max became the first celebrity couple to appear on the spin-off of the hugely popular daytime quiz show which aired in April.

The Wanted singer Max was the second contestant to step up to the podium after former Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu had already banked £1,000 for the team.

As Max was preparing for his cash builder, Bradley Walsh quizzed him on how he got into the music industry before his stint on Strictly Come Dancing came up.

With Maisie gushing in the background, the veteran host delved deeper into how Max and the Tiffany Butcher actress knew each other... completely unaware that the couple were in a relationship.

Bradley asked: "OK, how do you know each other?"

A jittering Max tried to reply before the host interjected: "Have you been out together?", which sparked laughter from the audience.

Max and Maisie both tried to explain to Bradley before the singer jumped in: "It's sort of going on at the minute."

This was followed by Bradley cheekily asking: "So erm, when's the big day?"

Playing along, Max turned to Maisie and said: "Funny you mention it, er..." and pretended to reach for a ring in his pocket.

Maisie quickly rose from her seat as she pretended to be flustered by the proposal, with Bradley quickly thinking that the marriage proposal was for real.

Max and Maisie have been in a relationship since last summer after growing close on the Strictly tour following their stint on the popular BBC dance competition in 2020.

Following his fake proposal, Max has now revealed that his girlfriend was left furious after they appeared on the ITV game show.

In a teaser clip from Thursday's instalment of Iain Stirling’s CelebAbility Max lifted the lid on Maisie's reaction after the show.

"The last time you were on a game show, you proposed to your girlfriend Maisie. Why did you do that? I thought it was real. You were on The Chase?" Iain asked.

To which Max admitted: "Yeah, right. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. And, it was a joke."

Iain then joked: "Do you know what girlfriend's love? When their partner proposes to them as a joke."

"No but it was like one of them things where Brad [Bradley Walsh] has said: ''so when's the big day?'' and then everyone laughed.

'And I said: 'well it's funny you ask'' and put my hand in my back pocket, like that, and Maisie went all sort of giddy.

"Off camera she shook her head, so I'm glad it wasn't real," admitted the pop star.

The couple's intense PDA on social media has divided followers since their romance began, but their relationship has gone from strength to strength, with Max asking Maisie to move in with him in early February.
