Dramatic footage has emerged of a van driver saving the life of a motorist after spotting him choking by the side of the road.

Brandon Alderson, from Sunderland, was travelling to work on Tuesday when he noticed a man in distress in a layby, The Sun reports.

He pulled over and saw that the man was signalling that he needed the Heimlich manoeuvre.

Brandon sprung into action, jumping out of his van and performing the anti-choking manoeuvre six times before the man finally cleared his airways.

Video from Brandon's dashcam went viral after his father posted it online.

"One proud dad, our Brandon saved someone's life yesterday," Neil Anderson wrote alongside the incredible footage.

“Right place at the right time - good on you son."

His mum added: "Words cannot express how proud I am of my boy performing the Heimlich manoeuvre yesterday, and potentially saving this man - a total stranger who was choking!"

Many praised Brandon for his heroic actions, with one writing:

"So easy for people to pass and not notice or even stop. Fair play!”

Another added: “Not all heroes wear capes, some have Hi-Vis jackets on.”

A third said: “This is what true heroism looks like! Brandon Alderson's quick thinking and actions saved a life. Thank you for being an inspiration to us all.”

The Heimlich manoeuvre, or abdominal thrusts, is a movement that lifts the choking person's diaphragm and expels air from their lungs, which in turn helps them cough up the object that is blocking their airways.

The NHS details how this life-saving manoeuvre should be performed:

  • Stand behind the person who's choking.
  • Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward.
  • Clench 1 fist and place it right above their belly button.
  • Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards.
  • Repeat this movement up to 5 times.

If the person's airway is still blocked after trying back blows and abdominal thrusts, it is important to get help immediately.

You can do this by calling 999 and asking for an ambulance - tell the 999 operator the person is choking.

The NHS advises that you continue with the cycles of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until help arrives.
