The beach holds fond memories for many of us, from delicious ice cream cones and sandy sandwiches to the beaming sun and cool coastline view.

It's also a firm favourite for dogs who love running freely across the sand, and in the water. One pooch owner has honoured her late four-legged friend with a touching gesture at his favourite beach, and it's left people in tears.

Beach-goers in Exmouth, Devon, found their hearts shattered after spotting a heartfelt note that encouraged dog owners to help themselves to a free ball.

Rex's owner explained that they'd recently lost the "goodest of good boys" and they wanted fellow dog owners to enjoy playing with a ball at his favourite place, Exmouth Beach.

Along with the note that painted an image of Rex's loving personality, the owner left a cardboard box full of tennis balls.

Taking to Twitter, Devon County Council posted a photo of the box alongside the heartfelt note.

The message read: "Rex loved the beach, Rex loved the ball. Please feel free to take a ball for your dog and I hope you all enjoy this place as much as we did."

"Rex - sleep well, my ginger prince." An additional note read: "The goodest of good boys."

Captioning their post, Devon County Council wrote: "A lovely gesture on Exmouth Beach."

Since sharing the note online, the tweet was inundated with responses - where touched individuals rushed to share their gratitude for the gesture.

One person wrote: "Lovely, and sad, in equal measures."

Meanwhile, someone else said: "I'm not crying, you're crying. On my way to scoop up my own favourite blonde boy to take him to the beach."

A third penned: "So nice.. but so sad, thankyou Rex."

Conservative MP for East Devon Simon Jupp penned: "This is truly heartwarming."
