We have all known and loved Frankie Muniz from his days bursting onto the scene as a child star in the hugely successful television series Malcolm In The Middle.

However, while many child actors either go on to see major success as bonafide Hollywood or disappear entirely from the limelight, Frankie has been busy making a name for himself in a completely different field.

The now 37-year-old is a fully-fledged NASCAR racing car driver and is hoping to make it to the top of the auto racing industry.

It's a career Frankie is adamant has fulfilled him extraordinarily and he admits he has no desire to go back to his old Tinseltown life.

Speaking about making the switch in careers, Frankie told CNBC's Make It series earlier this year, his feelings of "running out of time" made him "take advantage of having the opportunity to do things".

He said: "There's a lot of things in my life I've wanted to try. And I've wanted to see if I could find success in these businesses. And fortunately, because of what I got as a child actor, it gave me the opportunity to step back and try those other things.

"It gave me the freedom to do that. And I'm forever grateful for that."

Aside from his seven seasons as the main character on the hit series, which saw him classed as "one of Hollywood's most bankable teens" in 2003, he made guest appearances in Lizzie McGuire, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and MADtv.

On the big screen he featured in Agent Cody Banks movies, played Cher's underage boyfriend in Stuck on You, starred in Big Fat Liar and voiced many cartoon characters.

He is said to have banked a cool $5million for the reprisal of his Cody Banks role for the sequel.

But in 2003 at the age of 17, he was doubting his future. He said at the time: "I still don't know if I want to be an actor," he said. "I still don't know if that's what I want to do when I grow up.

"I always said when I got to my first million, we shouldn't be talking about money, but when I got to my first million, that I was done. I was rich."

He recently admitted his initial goal in life was to be a garbage man. "I love my past. I love everything I’ve done," he said earlier in the year.

"But I don’t remember ever saying I wanted to be an actor. I wanted to be a garbage man, honestly, and acting took over my life."

Moving into the motorsport industry sees him in a role he says he feels "I'm supposed to be".

He had competed in several dozen races between 2004 and 2013. This season he got off to a flier leading the table in points after his first three races in the ARCA series in the NASCAR feeder system.

And while the former kid star continues his goal to climb the ladder he is aware there is a long way to go if he is to achieve ultimate success in the sport.
