A mum-of-eight has opened up on fears for her children's safety after being stabbed during a violent scuffle.

Marie Buchan from Selly Oak, Birmingham, is calling for locals to be trained in how to stem bleeding with a kit if they come across a knife crime victim.

The campaigner, who hit headlines last year for becoming a grandma at the age of 40, is now attending bleed control workshops which she believes should be introduced in schools.

One of the workshops recently took place in Small Heath where residents were taught how to apply a tourniquet and improvise during an emergency.

Marie says she was urged to attend after being "stabbed in the hand" while trying to defend a friend.

She told Birmingham Live: "I see videos everywhere of people getting stabbed. Everyone is carrying a knife and it is so scary especially if you have kids.

"My nine-year-old daughter saw someone being chased in the park with a knife. Schools are now doing stop and searches as well.

"I can't do anything to stop it but I can teach people to surrender weapons to a knife bin, I have been to three workshops and realised there is so much I didn't know. I learnt to pack a wound, compress and use a tourniquet."

Bleed control kits were previously publicised by Lynne Baird, whose son Dan was stabbed to death during a night out with friends in Birmingham in 2017.

They contain a tourniquet, bandages, chest seals for chest wounds and a foil blanket for serious injuries. Some also come with gloves and scissors.

Marie added: "I have learnt so much and feel more confident to help, with the first workshop I didn't feel that confident.

"I think we should bring bleed control training into schools and I'd love to teach bleed control training in colleges."

The grandma has eight children between the ages of 10 and 22 and previously claimed she had to use foodbanks due to the cost-of-living crisis.

She said at the time: "I am around £160 per week worse off now. It is a struggle and I use food banks just to survive. I basically live on food banks at the moment.

"You have to do what you have to do to survive and I am so grateful that I can turn to them. They are a lifesaver for me and so so many other people."

Marie first hit headlines in 2016 when she appeared on the Channel 4 show Only Human, and later spoke out about anonymous social media accounts trolling her.

Her latest comments come a month after the launch of Operation Sceptre - a week-long campaign to tackle knife crime across the UK.

Earlier this year it was announced that the number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales was at its highest level since records began more than 76 years ago.

Office for National Statistics show 282 homicides were committed using a knife or sharp instrument in the year to March 2022.

It is a 19% rise compared with the previous year, and the highest annual total since 1946 records began.
