After months of rumours and endless speculation Apple has finally lifted the lid on its much anticipated VR glasses. This is the first time the US technology giant has ventured into virtual reality space and it seems the firm has big plans for the future of its gadget goggles.

This all-new wearable, called Vision Pro, has just had its grand unveiling at Apple’s WWDC Developers Conference and it certainly looks like it could make VR far more mainstream.

Those strapping it to their face will be treated to a new way to watch movies, make FaceTime calls, view photos and interact with apps. Visuals are all beamed right in front of your eyes with users able to run multiple windows side-by-side or fill the entire space with content to make it seem as if they sat in front of a giant screen.

What makes this headset different from its rivals is that the display can become transparent via something called EyeSight. That means those around you can see your eyes and you can see them when they walk into the room. This should make wearing it feel more sociable - something current VR devices definitely aren't.

This feature also brings a mixed reality feel to the ski-goggles device with data, content and messages all overlayed over the real world. Think of it a bit like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator movies.

This switch between VR and mixed reality can also be controlled via a Digital Crown-style controller (a bit like the Apple Watch) which sits on the side of the headset.

Like its rivals, such as the Meta Quest headset, Apple Glass comes packed with sensors which track where you are looking to make sure things feel fully immersive. It can also monitor your hands and eyes which is how users will interact with what's being shown on the screen.

To make sure it stays comfortable to wear, Apple has included a curved design which sweeps neatly around your face. A modular system can be adapted to make sure it fits all head shapes.

Of course, to get a mighty experience, it needs some impressive power and that’s provided courtesy of Apple's M2 processor which offers plenty of oomph for playing games, making video calls and watching movies.

Going virtual looks a lot of fun but it's not going to be cheap. The US company has confirmed that they will cost around $3,600 when they launch early next year.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing. Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before — with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations. It unlocks incredible experiences for our users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”
