When nuclear and renewable energy will be the cleaner, greener way to power Britain in the future, 13 years of Tory failure is unforgivable.

They have pulled the plug on electricity supplies by their failure to open a single nuclear power station and by banning cheaper, onshore wind turbines.

Keir Starmer would need to build just one plant to do better than the Tories. That might be Hinkley Point C, which isn’t due to come on stream for another four years – by which time he is likely to be Prime Minister.

Labour bequeathed central approval for 10 sites across England and Wales, so Britain needs to get building instead of burning oil and gas that heat up the world, threatening a catastrophic environmental emergency.

Nobody can pretend nuclear power is cheap or without risks and, in the long term, renewable energy sources are more desirable.

But to keep the lights on in the years ahead we will need more nuclear.

TB nightmare

The rise in cases of TB in Britain and globally is a danger we must not ignore.

Without a strategy to combat it at home and abroad we will be at the mercy of a condition many mistakenly believe was condemned to the history books.

In England, there are 7.8 cases per 100,000 population, while WHO calculates TB put 1.6 million people in early graves during 2021, more than 2022’s 1.2 million Covid deaths.

We need to do whatever it takes, whether that’s screening arrivals from high-risk areas or reintroducing jabs, or drug-resistant mutant strains could prove a nightmare.
