Early colonists of Rhode Island felt 20-acre Goat Island was only good for pasture. These days it is home to the Newport Harbour Island Resort, with its archetypal New England coastal getaway with open-air pool, beach club, cabanas and fire pits, a short stroll from the action of downtown Newport.

THE STYLE

Appropriately for a resort in the “sailing capital of the world”, there are nautical nods scattered liberally, from enormous yacht masts anchored in the flowerbeds and porthole mirrors on bedroom walls, to the schooner replicas which decorate the lounge.

The building is a striking, creamy modernist creation housing 257 rooms, a main tower and two long wings forming a right angle facing Narragansett Bay.

Our seventh-floor bedroom, with its spectacular panoramic views, channelled cruise- ship vibes and made the perfect spot for watching the sun set over the 1,600ft Newport Bridge.

THE FOOD

With two outdoor decks and a stylish, leather-clad lounge, The Restaurant serves up the smallest state’s classics at lunchtime, including smokey clam chowder, lobster rolls and crab hash.

At dinner, there’s a stark reminder you’re on the coast when you glance at the price list - Atlantic salmon is $36, while prime pork chop will set you back $62 (£50).

From late spring to early November the hotel’s fire pits are the perfect spot for sundowners and burger sliders. Come winter, igloos create a less blustery alfresco experience.

For more affordable fare, there’s a takeaway coffee shop, For Five Coffee, selling caffeine hits, pastries, turkey clubs and speedy salads.

WHAT TO DO

Whether you plan to swim in the outdoor pool, sip cocktails in a cabana or enjoy a light lunch by the water (the chicken salads and quesadillas are perennial favourites among guests) make sure you pack your best beachwear for the Pineapple Club, the place for people spotting when the sun shines.

In the summer months a kids’ club will keep young visitors occupied, and an ice rink arrives each December.

Don’t forget to leave time for a wander around the grounds – you’ll find the Insta-perfect Newport Harbour Light, a lighthouse built in 1842 and still in working order today.

Finally, book a slot at The Spa, where you can sign up for the Island Retreat – a shoulder massage, facial and seaside scrub ($205), or enjoy a manicure.

A DAY OUT

An hourly shuttle bus will whisk you the mile to Bowen’s Wharf, all cobbles and preserved wooden 18th-century colonial harbour buildings.

Looking for a laidback lunch with marina views? The Midtown Oyster Bar ( midtownoyster.com ) offers seafood platters brimming with littleneck clams, shrimp and lobster on ice.

Once fed, it’s only a brief wander to the Coastal Queen boat. Jump aboard for a narrated tour of the lighthouses and Gilded Age mansions of the Classic Coast.

If this sneak peek whets your appetite, take a tour of Ocean Drive to delve deeper into the playground of the Vanderbilts and the Astors (and, more recently, the likes of Judge Judy and Jay Leno).

Only time to see one? The jewel in the crown is The Breakers, a Renaissance-inspired, 70-room palazzo which cost $150million in today’s money to construct and has mosaic floors, Baccarat crystal chandeliers and Gold Room (literally) which was built in France, then shipped across the Atlantic.

Sports fans might prefer to call in to the newly opened Sailing Museum for the inside scoop on the America’s Cup while the International Tennis Hall of Fame is home to memorabilia from Serena Williams’ gold trainers to a hologram of Roger Federer.
