Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers players the ability to dress up Link in a litany of creative armour sets useful for exploring Hyrule, and we've whittled them down to the top five best ones.

Although there are ways for you to kit Link out in his classic green tunic synonymous with The Legend of Zelda franchise, beginning with Zelda: Breath of the Wild the hero of time broke new ground by using a flashy new blue one. This same Champion’s Tunic can be found fairly early on in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but your adventure would be served far better with any one of the multitude of armour sets. That’s because almost all come equipped with special effects that can increase Link’s natural abilities.

Of course, the best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set is whatever one best suits your need in the current situation you’re in. You’re bound to be exploring areas that are high, cold and hot, however, and it’s these environments we’ve focused on for this guide. Plus, don’t forget, if you become infatuated with a particular armour set, you can make it more powerful by visiting any one of the four Great Fairy Fountains sprinkled around.

Best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set for dealing damage

For our money, the best damage dealing armour set in the game has to be the Fierce Deity Armour. First seen in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the Fierce Deity armour is Link's reward for collecting all 20 of the games non-transforming masks and transforms him into an ultra-powerful form.

Sadly the Fierce Deity armour doesn't quite have the same effect in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but it still hits like a tonne of bricks. Hosting a native attack boost as well as a set bonus which decreases stamina use when performing charge attacks, allowing Link to perform powerful moves more frequently.

There's two ways to get this powerful armour set in-game. First, the set is available in the following places:

  • Fierce Deity Mask – Tempest Gulch
  • Fierce Deity Armor – Akkala Citadel Ruins
  • Feirce Deity Boots – Mount Daphnes

However, owners of the Link (Majora's Mask) amiibo can scan the amiibo for the chance to get parts of this armour daily (alongside the powerful Fierce Deity sword). This also gives you the chance to pick up this fiercely powerful armour set early on in the game.

Best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set with special abilities

There's a bunch of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour sets which give Link unique abilities,. there's the Mystic Robes which has Link drop Rupees upon taking damage instead of losing health; the Zora set which let's Link swim faster and swim up waterfalls; and the Glide set which improves Link's manoeuvrability in the air.

However, our favourite of these situational sets is the Froggy set which finally does away with one of the biggest annoyances from Zelda: Breath of the Wild and allows Link to climb walls while it's raining.

  • Froggy Hood complete the Lucky Clover Gazette's Potential Princess Sightings quest
  • Froggy Sleeve complete the Lucky Clover Gazette's Potential Princess Sightings quest
  • Froggy Leggings complete the Lucky Clover Gazette's Potential Princess Sightings quest

You'll get the Froggy set by completing the Lucky Clover Gazette's Potential Princess Sightings quest, just follow that questline and you'll be frogged up in no time.

Best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set for heat resistance

Some places in Hyrule are too hot for Link to walk about normally, while he could strip down and eat meals with heat resistance, it'll only take you so far. What you need is a good set of heat resistance enhanced armour and the Flamebreaker set is just that.

As logic would dictate, the best place to grab a piece of heat resistant armour would be the hottest place on the map – Death Mountain: home of the Gorons. Once you've headed into Goron City you'll see the Flamebreaker set in the Goron City armour shop, the pieces cost the following amounts:

  • Flamebreaker Helm - 1,400 Rupees
  • Flamebreaker Armor - 700 Rupees
  • Flamebreaker Boots - 1,200 Rupees

This set provides flame resistance for each piece equipped, so even if you can't afford all three it's worth an investment. However, if you have all three you get the set bonus of protection from fire, which is always a plus.

Best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set for cold resistance

Hyrule has it all! Places that are too hot for Link to traverse, and places that are too cold for Link. If you want a chance of not freezing to death in the Hebra Mountains you'll want to pick up the Snowquill set for cold resistant armour.

You'll actually pick up a nice pair of legwarmers in the opening hours of the game nearby known as the Archaic Warm Greaves (which is included in our Archaic armor guide). However just as logic dictated you'd find the best heat resistant armour in the hottest region, the same goes for the cold resistant armour.

Head up to Rito Village – which can be found by heading northwest from lookout landing – and you'll find the Snowquill set in the Rito Village shop, the pieces cost the following:

  • Snowquill Headdress - 650 Rupees

  • Snowquill Tunic - 500 Rupees

  • Snowquill Trousers - 1,000 Rupees

Like with the Flamebreaker set, each piece has cold resistance attached so it's worth picking them up as you go along. The set bonus for the Snowquill set gives Link immunity to being frozen by ice-based enemies, which is pretty cool.

Best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour set for cold damage

In addition to keeping warm while exploring cold parts of Hyrule’s map like the Hebra Mountains, there’s a way to let you make the most of your chilly surroundings in the form of armour that increases Link’s cold weather attacks. The best armour suited to achieving this is easily the Frostbite armour set.

The Frostbite armour set works a little bit differently to other armour sets on this list in that it cannot be purchased from anywhere. Instead you’ll find all three pieces littered around the northwest area of the map, in and around Rito Village. In some ways this is good because you won’t have to hand over precious rupees to acquire the Frostbite armour set, but then you’d usually have to keep a close eye when exploring specific caves.

Here’s all three pieces of the armour set and the name of the caves you can find them in:

  • Frostbite Headdress – Lake Kilsie Cave
  • Frostbite Shirt – Brightcap Cave
  • Frostbite Trousers – Hebra headspring Cave

If you want a more detailed breakdown of where to find all the pieces for the Frostbite armour set, feel free to check out our Tears of the Kingdom Frostbite armour set guide. Just bear in mind that when worn, just because the set significantly increased your cold damage by imbuing Link’s attacks with ice, doesn’t mean that you’ll get any cold resistance benefits as you do with the Snowquill set.

That’s why we’d always recommend cooking up some cold resistant food before you head of to that next icy region in search of something cool. This is easily done whenever you find a pot, and mixing a meat with a cold resistant foodstuff such as a Spicy Pepper.

Those are our choices for the best Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armour sets. Obviously this doesn't come close to covering the 30-plus armour sets in the game, each with their own pros and cons, because we'd be here all day.

However, we think these five in particular are fantastic choices for some of the most common situations you'll find yourself in while playing Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
