An English rock star has stunned fans with his totally unrecognisable appearance after ditching his wild ways.

The frontman shot to fame in the early 2000s with his band's debut album which went on to sell 1.5 million copies in the UK alone.

He embarked on a world tour and the band snapped up three BRIT Awards in one year alone.

At their peak the band even managed a Christmas hit, which fell just short of being the number 1 for that year, and made them a whopping £1million in the month of December alone.

Yet the singer quit the band just a few years later where alcohol and drug problems were initially cited as the reason.

He later revealed he had grown tired of the routine the band had been sucked into of producing, recording and touring an album on repeat.

Now, he is a married man with a child and lives a vegan lifestyle in rural Switzerland - but can you recognise him 21 years later?

It's Justin Hawkins from The Darkness!

He was once known for his long curly locks but the singer is now sporting a whole new look with much shorter hair and a fresh face.

The I Believe In A Thing Called Love hitmaker, 48, was spotted doing some shopping in Mayfair this week in a casual outfit.

He looked a fair cry away from his Darkness days, where he was usually seen donning a shiny jumpsuit revealing most of his chest.

Justin wore a black hoodie and green tartan cap paired with checked trousers and a Celine rucksack.

Hawkins moved Switzerland eight years ago, but recently returned to the UK to compete on The Masked Singer.

He was in Britain promoting the show in 2020 and only just made it back to Switzerland in time before the coronavirus outbreak prompted much of Europe to go into lockdown.

Justin competed in costume as the Chameleon and was unmasked after a sing off with the Duck, who turned out to be Skunk Anansie star Skin.

During the show, Justin got flirty with judge Rita Ora as she gushed over the disguised singer despite being in costume.

Rita admitted she had “checked out” the star, with other judges Jonathan Roos adding he could “see everything”. Davina McCall told Chameleon Rita had the hots for him.

He even handed her a rose during one of his performances and said he’d “enjoyed the attention”, but that his skintight Lycra made him “feel a little exposed in key areas”.

The Darkness' fame saw Justin spiral into a drug addiction where he famously blew £150,000 on cocaine over a three-year period.

His behaviour caused a rift between him and his brother Dan (The Darkness's guitarist) after which the brothers didn't speak to each other for two years.

It saw him checking into the Priory to deal with his alcohol and substance abuse problems, which resulted in the group splitting up in 2006.

Despite the heavy public downfall, Justin said in 2013 that he's thankful for the Christmas hit.

Speaking in 2013, he said: “It’s 10 years old now, but thank God Christmas songs are timeless.

“When I’m walking around Tesco and you can hear our Christmas song from mid-November onwards I do hear the sound of a small pound coin entering a piggy bank in my head.

“Then I think, ‘Ah yes, I will buy the Tesco Finest range instead of economy.’”
