Kylian Mbappe's long-term future is once again in doubt after the striker decided against taking up a one-year option in his Paris Saint-Germain contract.

Mbappe, 24, was heavily linked with a transfer last summer after running down his deal at the Parc des Princes. But the Frenchman eventually decided to snub interest from several of Europe's elite to commit his future to the Ligue 1 giants.

The sought-after forward put pen-to-paper on a three year deal, however, the final year of that deal is optional - meaning Mbappe would be free to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

And according to L'Equipe, that looks set to become a reality as Mbappe has no desire to extend his stay in the French capital until 2025.

Mbappe's reluctance to continue in Paris is likely to place Real Madrid on alert: the Spanish giants launched a colossal charm offensive in a bid to lure the striker to the Bernabeu last summer and were convinced they had a deal in the bag before Mbappe decided to extend his contract.

But Liverpool are also admirers of the striker and were touted as a potential destination for Mbappe, according to The Athletic. A report back in January claimed that PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and club consultant Antero Henrique were willing to allow Mbappe to leave for a staggering £352million fee, but Mbappe was not sold on the idea.

Jurgen Klopp has previously admitted that the club held an interest in signing Mbappe, while the man himself revealed he held talks with the club during an interview with The Telegraph.

"We talked a little bit, but not too much," Mbappe said last May. "I talked to Liverpool because it's the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don't know why, you will have to ask her.

"It's a good club and we met them five years ago [too]. When I was in Monaco I met them. It's a big club. Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the end."

While it remains to be seen if Liverpool would once again be interested in a deal for Mbappe, a summer move could still be on the cards. The striker's relationship with Neymar has made headlines all season - and Mbappe raised eyebrows when he hit out at the club's decision to feature him so heavily in their marketing campaign for 2023/24 season tickets.

In an Instagram post, Mbappe said: “I have just taken part in the viewing of the club's renewal campaign for the 23/24 season.

“At no time was I informed of the content of the interview with my interlocutor. It looked like a basic interview at a club marketing day. I disagree with this posted video. That's why I fight for individual image rights. PSG is a big club and a big family, but it is certainly not Kylian Saint-Germain.”
