A convicted killer is still on the loose after escaping prison on Monday, with police warning the public to keep away from the 'dangerous' murderer.

Bradley Gillespie, 50, escaped the Allen/Oakwood Correctional Institution (AOCI) in Lima along with James Lee, 47 on Monday morning.

Lee, a convicted safecracker and burglar, was captured in Henderson, Kentucky early today but Gillespie is still at large.

Six-foot-tall Gillespie was found guilty of the murder of Hannah Fischer, 21, and her boyfriend Frank Tracy Jr, 47, in September 2016.

He was sentenced to two consecutive 15-year-to-life terms after he was found to have brutally shot the couple in the head.

A $21,000 reward for information that led to the capture of one of the two men was confirmed by the United States Marshals Service Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF).

Henderson Police Department said the force was investigating along with "multiple" other agencies.

Earlier today, the force said Lee and Gillespie crashed a stolen car and Gillespie escaped a police chase on foot.

"At 3:16 this morning, the Henderson Police Department observed a stolen vehicle believed to be occupied by two escaped inmates out of Ohio," police said.

"Officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and it attempted to flee.

"Officers pursued the vehicle until it wrecked on Camaro Drive where the two occupants fled on foot. James Marion Lee was arrested. The other suspect, Bradley Gillespie, has not been apprehended."
