Amber Heard became a household name when she was sued by her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, when she indirectly accused him of being an abuser.

Even though the article didn't name him directly, Johnny argued that the Washington Post article from 2018 implied he had abused her and it was claimed that the piece had impacted his ability to work.

The jury found in favour of Johnny and awarded him $15 million (£12.06m) in damages. It however was reduced to around $10 million (£8.04m) due to a cap in Virginia, where the case was heard.

The case understandably made headlines around the world and drew so much attention that now the story is being told in a Channel 4 documentary, Depp V Heard, and the first episode aired last night.

But what happened to Amber after the trial came to a close? Here we take a look at the star's life, from a move to Spain, being both "mother and father" to her child, and being blacklisted by Hollywood.

Low-key life in Spain

It has been reported that Amber has relocated to Spain, and it's been said she isn't in "any hurry to return to work".

Earlier this month, it was reported that the actor had sold her home in Yucca Valley, California, and moved to Europe with her two-year-old daughter, Oonagh.

They were spotted in Majorca together towards the end of last year, and a local said at the time that Amber "leads a very normal village life, as if she were a native."

But now it's reported that she has moved "permanently" to an area near Madrid, and some say that she "has quit Hollywood and quietly relocated to Spain".

According tothe Daily Mail, a source claimed: "She's bilingual in Spanish and is happy there, raising her daughter away from all the noise."

The source went on to add: "I don't think she is in any hurry to return to work or to Hollywood, but she will probably come back when the time is right for the right project."

'Mother and Father'

Amber is now a single mum and describes herself as both the "mother and father" to her daughter, Oonagh.

Baby Oonagh was born via surrogate in April 2021 and Amber said that at just three-months-old the tot was already calling the shots.

She shared a photo on Instagram and said: "I'm just the mom and the dad. She's the boss."

The Pineapple Express actor initially shared the news about becoming a mother via Instagram, with a picture of her cradling baby Oonagh.

She wrote at the time: "I'm so excited to share this news with you. Four years ago, I decided I wanted to have a child. I wanted to do it on my own terms.

"I now appreciate how radical it is for us as women to think about one of the most fundamental parts of our destinies in this way.

"I hope we arrive at a point in which it's normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib. A part of me wants to uphold that my private life is none of anyone's business. I also get that the nature of my job compels me to take control of this."

She added: "My daughter was born on April 8, 2021. Her name is Oonagh Paige Heard. She's the beginning of the rest of my life."

It has since been reported that Oonagh's name is, in part, named after Amber's own mother, Paige, who sadly passed away in May 2020.

Blacklisted from Hollywood

Following the sensational trial last year, it was reported that Amber was set to be blacklisted by Hollywood producers amid the fallout from her multi-million dollar defamation trial loss to Johnny Depp.

But Jeffrey Nightbyrd, who signed Heard when she was 17, said the film star could return to the silver screen with an "original concept" film.

Speaking in June 2022, he said he believes she has what it takes to rebuild her career on her own terms.

Speaking from his home in Oaxaca, Mexico, Jeffrey said: "She has a very good brain and she should do her own projects.

"No one is going to produce her, so she should produce her own.

"I would bet one day Amber will produce and direct a film with an original concept."

He added that Amber would be well advised to focus on projects of "substance".

"Johnny Depp has been working on meaningful projects for the last year and a half," he said. "Amber got captured thinking money was the goal.

"She should learn from those people. In this era, when most women's roles are either silly or comic book-like action adventures, Amber will surprise everyone by going outside the system and embracing a role that challenges conventional thinking."

At the time of the court hearing, Amber said she was "humiliated" during the multimillion-dollar US defamation trial with her former husband Johnny Depp.

She was sued by Johnny over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post about her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse, which lawyers claim accused him of being an abuser. Johnny wasn't named in the article.

In June last year, a jury at Fairfax County Court returned a verdict in Johnny's favour.

Amber initially planned to appeal against the verdict, arguing that it would have a "chilling" effect on women, but she eventually made the "very difficult decision" to settle the case.

In a statement on Instagram, posted on Monday, she wrote: "After a great deal of deliberation I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.

"It's important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed."

The first episode of Depp V Heard aired at 9pm on Sunday, May 21, and the second episode airs tonight.
