This Morning guests' reactions to Phillip Schofield axe - 'gutted' star to digs

Phillip Schofield immediately quit his position on This Morning yesterday, amid rumours of a 'feud' with co-star Holly Willoughby.

His announcement was met with mixed reactions from former guests and stars of the ITV show, as Phil left his role after two decades.

Some shared their support for Phil, 61, whilst others used the opportunity to make a sly dig at the star.

Whilst Phil's friendship with co-star of 13 years Holly is believed to be in "tatters" after telling pals behind the scenes that he has been left "hung out to dry".

In an announcement to his fans on Instagram, Phil said that he was stepping down in a bid to “protect the show that I love” - but failed to mention his former best pal Holly.

Support

One person showing their support to the This Morning star was Matthew Wright, who said: "Gutted for @Schofe - there for me when I was having problems a few years back x."

The former Wright Stuff host has appeared on the ITV show many times to discuss the day's headlines.

Holly Willoughby also shared a sweet tribute to her co-worker as she took to Instagram to share an additional statement.

She wrote: "Hi everyone...It's been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour.

"The sofa won't feel the same without him."

Sly dig

Whilst others used the announcement to make a dig at Phillip, as Amanda Holden shared a cryptic post.

The pair previously fell out on the ITV daytime programme with reports suggesting he never wanted her to star alongside him.

Amanda, 52, has never shied away from sharing what happened between herself and Phillip and previously told Heart Radio listeners she once extended an olive branch to him – which he ignored.

In view of her 2 million followers, Amanda took to her Instagram shortly after Phil's news broke, sharing a bicep curl emoji, which is often used to show support and strength to people.

Her post which has raked up thousands of likes was soon flooded with comments, with former Coronation Street star Charlie Condou penning: "Exactly."

"I know what that's for," joked a second.

A third commented: "No Holden back for sure, YES AMANDA!"

Another former host to make a sly dig was Eamonn Holmes who uploaded a snap of his granddaughter Emilia kissing his cheek as he told his followers: "Pappa got a smacker. Thank u Emilia. All in all that rounded off what turned out to be a good day".

Fans who thought the former This Morning presenter was hinting at Phillip's exit responded back to the Irish journalist. One follower wrote: "Ha ha Eamonn, I know you must be happy with the news".

Another added: "I see what you did there. Love it".

Earlier this week Eamonn made a comment about the ongoing feud between Phillip and Holly on his GB News show.

"I think there should have been a special award for Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby for best actors," he said, referring to the TV BAFTAs that took place on Sunday night.

Former GMB star Piers Morgan, 58, has spoken previously of his friendship with Holly Willoughby, defending her last year during Queuegate, so fans have speculated this could spark his big ITV comeback.

Taking to Twitter he broke his silence by sharing a photo of himself and Holly and said: "Thanks to everyone suggesting I might replace Philip Schofield at This Morning in a Lazarus-like comeback to ITV.

"Unfortunately, there’s just one problem: I still don’t believe a single word Meghan Markle says!"

Another person eying up the job is DJ Fat Tony, who shared a photo of him behind the decks with Alison Hammond beaming, which was captioned: "The new presenters of @thismorning @alisonhammond55."

Lashing out

Former guest Kim Woodburn hasn't been holding back her thoughts on Holly and Phil, as she hit out at the pair last week, branding Phil an “obnoxious, horrible man,” and Holly a “two-faced b***h”.

In the wake of Phil’s shock resignation, Kim told GB News that she thinks he has done the right thing butit is time Holly left the show too - suggesting the younger star is complicit in Phil’s toxic behaviour.

Kim said: “I think he realises his position is untenable. I think he has used common sense and he is gone.

“You could tell he was king on that show. I mean, he was really ruling the roost. And whenever I've been on with him, he hasn't been very pleasant. He was downright nasty. He was literally laughing at me sniggering at me.

“The game's up. Everything's out about him. It's all been exposed. He's gone. Now, the only thing I'm praying and hoping is that young Miss Holly Willoughby has the common sense to go.”

Kim said: “She cannot continue. You think of Phil, you think of Holly.

“All these years she's worked with him. She's heard him be rude in front of people. She's seen him on the sofa upsetting people. She’s never once pulled him up on it.

“She should’ve told him to stop.”
