Bridgerton star's Coronation comments hit with another 4,000 complaints

Bridgerton actress Adjoa Andoh's comments about the Buckingham Palace balcony during King Charles III's Coronation coverage on ITV has been hit with another 4,000 complaints this week.

Last week, the 60-year-old actress' remarks sparked a record of complaints to the broadcasting regulator this year after she commented on how the Buckingham Palace balcony was "terribly white".

Ofcom reported 4,165 complaints last week and those complaints have since doubled.

This week's Ofcom report shows the Coronation's coverage received a further 4,087 complaints, the majority of which were related to comments made by Adjoa Andoh, bringing the total to 8,228.

Meanwhile, Gogglebox received 88 complaints for Joe Kyle’s comments about the Coronation and Good Morning Britain received 52 complaints related to Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu’s description of the Royal Family and interaction with other guests during her appearance.

Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte actress Adjoa, who plays Lady Danbury in the Netflix hits, made the comments during ITV's coverage of the Coronation on the day King Charles and Queen Camilla were crowned.

Sitting alongside Myleene Klass to discuss the historic day, Adjoa told presenters Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham: "We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony.

"I am very struck by that. I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: 'What are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?'"

Adjoa's comments sparked a huge reaction online and on television as she later insisted she didn't mean to cause offence by her remarks.

"I think I upset a few people yesterday," Adjoa told Paddy O'Connell on BBC Radio 4.

"I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end and suddenly going: 'Oh it's so white!' because the day had been so mixed and I didn't mean to upset anybody."

Radio 4 host Paddy O'Connell said Adjoa had "nothing to apologise for" and added: "You haven't upset anyone."

While the actress' comments sparked backlash, Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, who often appears on ITV shows like Good Morning Britain, defended Adjoa.

Dr Shola tweeted: "#AdjoaAndoh told no lies in factual observation of ‘terribly White’ (literal & symbolic) Buckingham palace balcony at #Coronation in contrast to tokenism of race diversity at Westminster Abbey & got branded ‘racist’

"White people false equivalence of racism is laughable."

She added: "For me it’s the lack of critical thinking re why the contrast is terrible as she rightly points out.

"Even if Adjoa Andoh spent 99.99% on TV adulating King Charles & British Monarchy, that one observation of White Balcony erases it because for racists she doesn’t know her place."

The comment is the most complained about moment to Ofcom so far this year.
