The remains of a 79-year-old British woman have been found in Cyprus, local police say.

Investigators said Ann Naisbitt was reported missing from her Paphos home in early April and they have now confirmed the remains match.

The bones were found in an area near Yeroskipou — a coastal village in Cyprus, east of Paphos — on Monday, near the location where a farmer had found a skull the day before.

In addition to the skull and bones, the coastal district’s police on Monday also collected clothing and a silver necklace with a heart pendant from the site they were found.

Police said Ann, who had dementia, was also reported missing one year ago but was found days later.

People have taken to social media to express their condolences at the news.

One page called 'Ask Anything Cyprus' wrote: "It is with great sadness we report that the missing lady Ann Nesbitt has now been found.

"May she Rest in Peace and our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. Thank you to everyone on here who took the time to help the family and search for her over these past weeks."

Another, Bejay Browne, wrote: "My thought's are with Ann's family and friends. We had all so been hoping she would be found alive, hadn't we? RIP."

Val Elsdon said: "Such sad news. I knew Ann from 10-pin bowling every Thursday… always smiling. My heart goes out to her son and all the family."

Police had cross-checked their records of missing persons over the past ten years to help identify the remains.

Meanwhile, another British family are desperately searching for their missing elderly mother.

Susan Hart, 75, has vanished without a trace off the secluded island of Telendos.

Officials launched an extensive search for the mum, aided by volunteers and the coast guard, as well as three daughters - Bethan from Canada, Ella 43, from London and Ruth, 45, who flew in from Australia.

There have been claims that Susan was found dead at the bottom of a cliff, but Bethan refutes this.

"We have been desperately trying to shut down these claims. One of the search teams actually called up a Greek TV show that made the claims and threatened to sue them if they did not take down the claims," Bethan told the Mirror.

She continued: "How does someone just disappear without a trace? The hopes of finding her alive are diminishing by the day and my sisters and I do not know what to do next."
