A cruise passenger has been accused of being "tacky" for their choice of outfit worn down to the breakfast buffet.

When aboard a ship it is absolutely vital that you make the most of the all-inclusive offering and arrive at breakfast, lunch and dinner in plenty of time to fully tuck in.

After a big night on the complimentary cocktails or a long afternoon sunning yourself on the deck, it can be difficult to make the breakfast window in good time.

This was seemingly the case for one passenger who appeared to have rushed out of bed to the ship's restaurant, or else simply has a particular fashion sense.

Reddit user ‘Automatic_Aide_6012’ spotted the outfit and later wrote: “What are your thoughts on wearing pyjamas on a cruise breakfast?

“I think it is kind of nice to wake up early, brush your teeth and head straight to breakfast. Then you can leisurely head back to your stateroom and get ready before starting your daily activities.”

While cruise ships often have a dress code for evening meals and events, this isn’t often the case for breakfast. Despite this, many other regular cruise guests were less than impressed by the passenger’s choice of outfit.

“Put on some casual clothes and go to breakfast. You’re on vacation but you’re not at your house," one person wrote.

Another passenger said they usually brought a pair of "jogger pants and a sweatshirt" for the breakfast buffet, so the process of getting dressed in the morning wasn't too arduous.

One passenger said they felt that eating breakfast in the restaurant while wearing pyjamas was "tacky".

One Reddit user said they saw no problem with being dressed casually for breaking - so long as you did so in your own room.

They argued: "Wearing pyjamas while you eat your breakfast is perfectly acceptable, provided you order room service and eat in your state room."

They said that dining in pyjamas would likely "raise a few eyebrows" in any restaurant around the world.

Passengers can opt to order room service on a cruise but this will usually incur an additional charge. Fellow guests might not mind children wearing their pyjamas to the breakfast buffet, particularly if it’s a family-oriented cruise, but adults will likely be held to a higher standard.

Not everyone was put off by the idea and some guests said they thought passengers should wear whatever they wanted.

"Who cares? Live your life. They’re just clothes and you’re on vacation. As long as they aren’t revealing," one person wrote.

Another said: "It’s a cafeteria. Wear whatever you like. Anyone who passes judgement should mind their own business."

The original passenger said: "I’m surprised by these comments. Vacation or not, I don’t understand why people have such a strong opinion on what other people wear, as long as it’s not super revealing."

As well as the many potential fashion pitfalls and hurdles you may have to navigate while eating on a cruise, there are also culinary and hygiene concerns as well.

According to the experts at Cruise Critic, there are some foods you may want to try and swerve when perusing the cruise buffet.

Pre-made sushi rolls are top of the list - as even the freshest fish can go off quickly if it's out on the buffet for a day or two. Pizza is another food to keep an eye on - especially if it looks like the cheese has congealed, a sign that it may have been left out for a few days.

As for dessert? The Cruise Critic experts suggest opting for a bowl of ice cream rather than a cone, using the logic that you're likely to transfer germs from the well-touched soft-serve machine to the wafer container, which you then eat.
