Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has ditched the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars amid a raft of controversial U-turns, sparking yet more Tory in-fighting.

Mr Sunak said he would delay a ban on the sale of such vehicles by five years, as well as watering down other key climate commitments, including the weakening of targets to phase out gas boilers.

But the measures have faced criticism from across the political spectrum as well as from businesses and environmental groups. Mr Sunak has been warned the changes could drive up costs for the public, as well as being accused of putting his party's electoral prospects ahead of the planet.

Labour blasted the prime minister for kow-towing to net zero-sceptic Tories, and said the plans would actually add more costs to the British public while wrecking investor confidence.

Earlier this year, Labour leader Keir Starmer said people have had enough of the 'farce' of Tory rule and wanted a General Election NOW. He said: “Rishi Sunak must finally find a backbone, call an election, and let the public have their say on 13 years of Tory failure. This farce must stop. People have had enough.”

Mr Starmer warned Rishi Sunak’s government is crippled by “complete inertia”. The Labour leader accused the Tories of being “simply unable to move forward”. General elections in the UK - where all 650 MPs are elected to the House of Commons - have to be held no more than five years apart. This represents five years from the day the current Parliament first met - which was December 17, 2019 - plus extra time factored in for an election campaign.
