Canelo Alvarez has been told to stay away from Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev following his one-sided win against John Ryder.

Alvarez, 32, outclassed Ryder, 34, this past weekend in his Mexico homecoming by winning with scores of 120-107, 118-109 and 118-109. Ryder showed immense heart as his nose was a mess come the final bell, with Alvarez going on to state the 34-year-old was the toughest Brit he's faced so far.

Welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr admitted that he didn't watch Alvarez's win over the weekend but thinks the Mexican would be troubled by Bivol and Beterbiev. “I think he should stay away from Bivol. Stay away from Beterbiev too, go back to 168lb and handle your business because 175lb is pushing it. I don't think his power really affecting Bivol at 175lb like it would at a lower weight.” Spence Jr said of Alvarez when speaking with ES News.

Spence Jr did compliment Alvarez by backing him in a potential fight against fellow super-middleweight world champion David Benavidez, adding: "That would be a good a** fight because they’re going to be right there with each other. Canelo is probably more slicker, but that would be a good fight.”

Alvarez came up short last year in his bid to capture another world title at light-heavyweight having achieved the feat in 2019 as he was beaten by Bivol. A rematch between the pair has since been expected but Alvarez moved back down to 168lb after the loss to defend his undisputed belts.

British boxing legend Carl Froch also weighed in on Alvarez's recent win over Ryder by insisting the Mexican champion is past his prime. Froch backed Bivol to beat Alvarez again in a potential rematch and questioned why Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn has remained quiet about the second fight.

"I think Canelo is past his best, which everyone knows, but it’s just about levels basically. It has to be Bivol but it looks like he’s swerving it. Eddie Hearn loves a rematch but has been a bit quiet around it, but Bivol is who he should fight next. Why is it not happening? I think Bivol wins if it happens, when you look at the last time they fought. Bivol was really busy, fresh, strong and powerful," Froch told SportingPost.
